Car Rental during Peak Seasons
I have to go to Florida in December, and I was checking the car rental
prices at MIA and FLL, where the peak season rates (I guess after 12/15) are around $90 per day for a compact car. Then I checked the car rental rates for places like Enterprise's non-airport locations, and the rate is around $35 per day. This is a good method to use if you can get to one of the non-airport locations and back for not a lot of money. |

I was trying to find a rental car for Mon.-Sat. of Thanksgiving week (another peak season) at SMF (Sacramento). The cheapest I could find on Orbitz was nearly $300 for an economy car. I checked Hotwire and found an economy for $187. Then I tried a lowball bid of $20/day ($111 total, with taxes and fees) on Priceline and got a MID-SIZED. Like the song says, you better shop around. |

Well I finally got a price from Hertz of $45/day for a compact, versus $38 from Enterprise, so it was worth not having someone drive down ferry us back and forth to the airport. There was a big difference in rates between the Hertz rate and the next rate up, $500/week for the second tier rental companies, and $550 for National, Alamo, Budget, and Avis. I might try a low-ball bid on Priceline in a few weeks. |
