I came back to an almost summery day in the Chicago area, but the forecast isn't so good over in Michigan for the next few days, and that's where I head today. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad |

It started to snow as we got closer to Bergen and rained there, but it was lovely and sunny in Copenhagen 8-) I had been to Denmark a couple times in early May and had wanted to go back a little later in spring /summer to see it when it was a little more lush. The last time we were there was in late June, after spending the week leading up to Midsummer in Sweden. The weather was a major disappointment. We arrived in time for a cold snap. The weather was worse in late June than it had been in early May. And forget about sleeping with the sun staying up 23-1/2 hours a day. Dark curtains! I had them on the ship and in the hotels I stayed in 8-) I wish. We had arrived at our niece's place in Tallinn around June 10. The walls in the guest room were white and there were lace half curtains on the big window. It got a little darker for about 5 minutes after midnight but the sun was bright by 1:30 am. In Sweden we stayed at a friend's summer house. Again... white walls and large windows, and only partly covered by drapes. We spend Midsummer there and I remember that the sun dropped below the horizon for a few minutes around 12:30 am. By 2 am there was blazing sunlight. Then we went to Copenhagen. Being about 250 miles further south there was a slight difference in the length of the day. Our hotel room had smaller windows and darker curtains. After two weeks of almost no sleep and perhaps adjusting to what had been a sudden change, we managed to get some sleep there. |

There's a lot to be recommended about the felt eye-shields available in catalogs from various travel need companies! I never needed them in my travels, but my East-facing bedroom here in Arizona has vertical blinds which the cats manage to disarrange every night. (True, we DO get a reasonable number of hours of darkness, but I'm not a big fan of early rising, and sunrise this time of year is around 6:15 A.M.) |

David Hatunen Did you try a sleep mask? Hand out free on long distance flights. It's years since I've been given a sleep mask on a long haul flight. |

I've always been given them on flights from Europe to Australia. It never occurred to me that I might need one. I had never been that far north before. Even as far south as The Netherlands the number of hours of darkness is short in summer. There must be places in the USA that have a similar lack of darkness in summer. In Fairbanks for example Even the Netherlands is considerably further north that most of the US. It is quite a bit further north than the most populous parts of Canada. Stockholm is about the same latitude as the northern borders of the prairie provinces. Here in southern Ontario, sunset on the summer solstice is a few minutes after 9 pm. while int he Netherlands it will be an hour later. |

We usually fly in late May or June. It's an overnight flight following a great circle path. The flight departs in early evening and as you fly toward the northeast the sun is off the left wing (I try to get seats n the right side). As you fly over Canada and approach Greenland the sun remains off the left wing. It never ctually sets and as you fly from Greenland down to England the sun remains off the left wing. But when you land in the morning there it's the next day. Dave Hatunen, Tucson Free Baja Arizona |
