Is the area around 90th street and Broadway interesting ? I will be in
NYC in december and I'm considering staying at the Quality Inn on
Broadway. I d'like to have some opinions about this area, including
restaurants and bars.

Thats a good area. It's only a few minutes subway ride from Times Square
etc.

The hotel is on 94th and Broadway. It is a good neighborhood and hotel
is 100 feet to the subway entrance. An express train takes about 8
minutes to get to Times Square
FRom 90th to 95th from Broadway to Amsterdam Ave (one block east of
Broadway) there are
4 Italian restaurants
2 Mexican restaurants
2 Indian restaurants
And one each of the following : Thai. Tex Mex, Peruvian, Middle
Eastern,
Chinese/SPanish, Steakhouse (Kosher), a diner
Two fast food places - MacDonalds and SUbway
There is a very popular bar The Dive Bar - on Amsterdam and 96th
Also on Amsterdam is one of the most popular restaurants in the area -
Saigon Grill - Vietnamese - anytime you walk by there are at least 20
people waiting to get in.

If you like Gothic Architecture visit the largest cathedral in the
world, The Cathedral Church of St John the Divine . 112th Street and
Amsterdam Avenue, one block east of Broadway.

I grew up near there. It's a residential neighborhood with Broadway as
the main business street. I don't think it's that interesting, but if
you do stay there, the Natural History Museum/Hayden Planetarium
complex is very walkable, at 77-81 Sts. between Columbus and Central
Park West. Perhaps my favorite residential highrise in New York is the
Apthorp, between 78th and 79th Sts. between Broadway and West End, and
there's a companion to in between 86th and 87th between Broadway and
Amsterdam. The Apthorp is truly beautiful and worth looking at. The
Ansonia, on 74 St. and Broadway, is also striking if arguably not that
beautiful, and worth walking past at least once. West End is an avenue
of somewhat cavernous spaces, I now feel because I now live downtown
among lowrises. These 12-to-16-story apartment houses mostly date from
the first couple of decades of the 20th century and are not bad.
Riverside and Central Parks are nice. But if you want nightlife and a
good restaurant scene, you'd be better off downtown. However, the
Upper West Side is way preferable to the Disney - um, I mean Times
Square district.

I will be in
NYC in december and I'm considering staying at the Quality Inn on
Broadway. I d'like to have some opinions about this area, including
restaurants and bars.

As I said, your best bet is to get out of that neighborhood for
restaurants and bars. Go to the Lower East Side/East Village,
Chinatown, the Village, and Hell's Kitchen.

If I'm not mistaken this building has a twin on 7th Ave at 116th (where I
used to live, though up there we had a 4br with 2 baths, living room and
formal dining room for $1400/month back in 1996).

Seldom. Please count waiting time! I'd say on average, the trip would
take more like 20 minutes. But I'd also recommend spending as much
time away from Times Square as possible, in any case.

How many do you consider good? Over long experience, I've found the
Upper West Side both overpriced and slim pickings, generally speaking.

And one each of the following : Thai. Tex Mex, Peruvian, Middle
Eastern,

Hmmm...Jerusalem Felafel is quite OK, but it's around 105 St. and
Broadway. I don't know the Middle Eastern place you're referring to.

The Peruvian place I know is at 101 St., Flor de Mayo. Their chicken
is good but I prefer El Malecon. What's the place you're referring to?

Chinese/SPanish,

All the Chinese restaurants I know of and have eaten at in the last
few years on the Upper West Side suck, or used to be acceptable but
then became sucky.

Steakhouse (Kosher), a diner
Two fast food places - MacDonalds and SUbway
There is a very popular bar The Dive Bar - on Amsterdam and 96th
Also on Amsterdam is one of the most popular restaurants in the area -
Saigon Grill - Vietnamese - anytime you walk by there are at least 20
people waiting to get in.

My recommendations:

Low-end:

The taco truck (Super Tacos Sobre Ruedas) in the evening/night on 96th
and Broadway. Very cheap and good.
El Malecon (Dominican) on Amsterdam between 97th and 98th. Regular
specials around $7.50 or so lunch and dinner. They have breakfast too,
but I've never tried it. Great pollo a la brasa!

High-end:

Pampa (Argentinian steakhouse) on Amsterdam between 97th and 98th.
Expect to pay about $40-50/person including wine, tax, tip. Worth it.
If you go, do not get the entrana (skirt steak) for two; it's enough
to feed an army! Get the regular portion and share it two ways if
there are two of you.

Ouest (sort of Nouvelle cuisine) on Broadway between 83rd and 84th.
I've been once and liked it, but my parents were less impressed (my
mother found the confit de canard too fatty, for example). By some
measures, it's mid-priced. But it's about $40/person for dinner
including tax and tip but not wine. There are walk-in tables in the
front if you don't have reservations. I had some Chinon there that I
liked.

In addition to the other good advice you have received, Symphony Space is
just a block away, and has a full schedule of unusual performances. As
well as a movie theatre that shows classic films.

..

One of the Italian restautants in Gennero on Amsterdam and 93rd. Good
food and reasonably priced but they have a $20 minimum per person.
Always a wait unless you get there before 6:30. Carmines is another
Italian restaurant. IF you go by the crowds waiting to get a table it
appears to be a favorite of lots of people. Not mine - too noisy, too
much garlic

The middle eastern restaurant is called Cleopatra's Needle - Broadway
between 94th and 93rd. Overpriced

Periuvian - relatively new. Name is Sipan and is one the corner of
94th and AMsterdam. Good food and not overpriced..,

The Chinese/Spanish is the Neuva VIctoria on the corner of 95th and
Broadway.

Ate in Pampa once - meat was too tough for my taste. Portions are huge
as you pointed out.

We agree on the Malecon if you don't mind smelling of garlic for a
week after you eat there. My favorite take out meal. A whole chicken,
yellow rice a container of red or black beans and an order of platinos
meduro. Feeds four people and cost is $11
