alt.free.newsservers is probably a good place to look :-)

Yes! Someone more technically savvy OR more logical! )

Trying a post from news.motzarella.org (found on alt.free.newsservers) via
OE.

@m73g2000cwd.googlegroups.com:

My ambition, however, is to one day live in a country with NNTP servers
so I can avoid Google Groups.

There are some free servers out there. I'm sure someone who's more
technically adept can help here. I remember using a few of these servers
when my provider's news server wasn't working for about a month. I couldn't
handle google for more than a day!

I can't "handle" Google at all! (There are far better
search engines out there, too - Ask.com for one.) Just
because Google seems to have the imprimatur of many ISP's
does NOT make it the best!

I noted that for an rte newbie he had learnt to over snip to make a
point in record time. I countered that with a quick plonk.

Nonsense! I didn't purposely oversnip. And bear in mind if you've plonked
me you'll miss my words of wisdom on umtm!

I have yet to find a moderated newsgroup that I like enough to stick
around in.

I participated in one moderated group a few years ago, and the
moderator was SLLLOW in posting messages. And it was even
robo-moderated(some software autoposting), and for whatever it never
worked properly. It also randomly dropped postings, which was
irritating as well.

In one extreme bad example, the moderator felt that he needed to add
his $.02 TO EVERY POST on the group. And if he did so, normally, by
replying, it would only be half-bothersome. No, he would EDIT YOUR
ORIGINAL POST, and put a "[I haven't seen that -Ed]" etc at the end of
your post. Imagine quoting issues and who-said-what problems.

Nonetheless, traffic on the group is next to zero now, except for the
annoying monthly digest that he circulates (which has nothing but news
clippings he finds interesting)

Newsgroup politics always play a role in who is the moderator, who gets
censored, etc. I especially dislike the censorship that happens on
gray-area legal issues like copyright infringement, piracy, etc. Then
you have the manufacturer ass-kissers that censor early release info,
etc etc.

While you have your share of idiots everywhere, I'll killfile the
idiots to have the freedom of instant censor-free posts.
