Apnea would explain the captain's sleepiness, but what's the copilot's excuse?
If they truly had fifteen hours of rest before the flight, there's no reason
why they shouldn't have slept.

Notice: If a reader knows an airplane jockey that's gotta stay awake
prob, then here's a WIKI article to cogitate on

Layman's further observation: it's also a POSSIBLE solution for the
need of a legal stimulant--consult physician

Apnea patients need sleep, not stimulants. And apnea can cause other problems
if untreated, such as hypertension.

Did ya read the article, because it indicates rather emphatically that
it's indicated for sleep apnea patients.

The article doesn't discuss the damne disease per se, while I bet
you're correct about a high blood pressure cause, tho again in my
layperson preposterous speculation there ain't hardly nuthin that
don't cause blood to circulate--death excepted

Oh. That one.

That refers only to obstructive sleep apnea. There are other
kinds of sleep apnea. The articles, and others, are vague on just
why Modafinil should help with obstructive sleep apnea. But it
seems that the drug is being investigated as a no-sleep pill,
something that can keep a person going for a couple of days with
no sleep. Even the military is interested in THAT.

So it appears that the drug is touted not for being a drug for
sleep apnea, but rather a stimulant to get rid of that sleepy
feeling in the daytime if you have sleep apnea.

Yeah, I concur.

Also, imho, to get rid of the meth plague (which is apparently
destroying rural America) an adaptive society would encourage much
more prescribing of the miraculous stuff.

But there are surely negative consequences, so we'll be studying it &
procrastinating to puritanical eternity.

I suppose good, reputable doctors need encouragement, because they're
scared that politicized authorities
won't approve, even though it's legal and clearly indicated in the
medical literature for the fatigue of shift workers.

No, as I'm already familiar with apnea treatments from the medical literature,
so I don't need to read articles intended for the general public.

The article doesn't discuss the damne disease per se, while I bet

Hypertension results from compensating mechanisms that try to maintain
oxygenation even when breathing stops. The blood pressure can rise extremely
high over short periods, and it seems that it may become chronically high if
this occurs regularly.
