I have compiled a partial list of London hostels with prices ranges
included on another travel board:

http://www.chatarea.com/Backpackers.m1564755

I'll add to it later as I find more of them, but it's not a bad list
of the budget accommodation available. Hope this helps.

If you go to the site www.loot.com you can find "short lets" and other short
term accommodation for reasonable prices. Last February my son and I stayed in
Leytonstone in a house for 8 days. It cost me 140 GBP. WE had use of the
kitchen and laundry as well... For that price travel by tube for just about
45 minutes was no big deal! The kitchen facilities saved us a bundle of money
that we spent on other things. Besides, shopping at Tesco and ASDL (??- the
Walmart owned food chain) and Sainsbury's helped us see how the "everybody"
locals tastes varied. The foods were great, and we saw several really neat
foods that Canadians, as a whole, are oblivious to. My son also learned that
food and basic living is more expensive than here (Canada) so don't knock what
you have ...... Living in a British house and using a "hob" was also an
experience for him....

Thanks Miguel! After I posted I found an old "souvenir" ASDA bag from the trip.

You may want to check http://www.hostelworld.com/ We actually booked our
accommodation in both London and Paris through that website and got rates
MUCH cheaper than advertised anywhere else. In London, we got a double for
20 pounds a night (10 pounds per person), which is cheaper than you can get
a dorm bed most other places. I'd give it a try.
