Sleepervans
I am looking at renting a sleepervan versus a campervan to travel both
islands in New Zealand. Seems that it could accommodate a couple nicely with a few less conveniences such as washroom, water and fridge which a person can work around. Prices are considerably less which makes it bit more attractive. Wondering if anyone has done this and how they compare. Are they cheaper to run (gas wise)? Seems they would be easier to handle driving on those windy road? |

Joyce,
Our trip to New Zealand will be in January. I can't speak from experience, except to say that we did quite a lot of internet research and looked into several companies, as well as an expeditor that was in the United States and pretending (including the accent!) to be located in NZ. We corresponded with several larger companies and finally received information from- Joy and David Bishop, Affordable Campervan Hire- that was to our liking. The company is family owned and located in Christchurch, so they do charge a delivery charge to get the campervan to the Auckland airport. That charge is little more than the ferry fee, I suppose. Since booking the hire, for about a 4 week period in January, the Bishops have helped us by recommending backpacker accomodations, ferry info, airport transport, etc. We really like working with the "family" company. If anyone else has contracted with them, please let me know. Right now our instincts are that they are a good company with good customer service. "Joyce Eberle" wrote in message ... Also try http://www.newzealand-motorhomes.com/index.php they have huge index of campers. we did not end up booking through them, (due to other reasons) but they were very helpful and can access all the hire companies and perhaps offer some comment as to your enquiries. We rented from Pacific Horizon in the end - found them to be very good. I cannot comment on sleeper v other, as we had 5 people and hired a 6 berth with everything that opened and shut. My only reccommendation would be to stay in national parks and other roadside stops - there are some amazingly nice places. Traveller |

A sleepervan is as Joyce described them - a no-frills version of a campervan, basically a van with bedding! Here are some pics: http://www.rentalcars.net.nz/sleepervan.html http://www.breakawaynz.com/display.php?PROD_ID=1419 These guys stick a bit more in the deal: http://new-zealand-rental-cars.com/sleepvans.htm |
