It really makes me mourn the loss of SnowLeopard in many ways!

I'm battling back from disaster-- almost all my apps on the iPad were wiped
clean of all data somewhere in the middle of the nasty battle with a new
computer with the worst OS I've ever had to deal with: Yosemite. I now have
to clear away the old posts here to get up to date before I leave home on
my yearly trip combo and have only Newstap on the iPad with me.

only because itunes asked if you wanted to delete them and you said
yes. you apparently did not migrate the old system to the new computer,
so itunes saw it as a different computer.

It WAS migrated by someone much more capable than I, but I did something
wrong on the backup attempt.

The point is someone (you or your "more capable" helper) caused your
data to be erased from the iPad by answering "yes" to the question "This
will delete all data from your iPad. Are you sure?" It's not something
that just happens on its own.

I love how s/he/it blame Yosemite for s/he/it's ****up.

Oh, that's only one of the many things Yosemite has mucked up!

It's remarkable how defensive the iCrowd gets about catastrophes. I've
lost things and it's awful. Since I'm a computer engineer, I have the
knowledge to indulge my obsession with backups. For (computer) laymen,
the loss of data varies from a PITA to life-changing crisis.

Erilar, you have my sympathy.

Sympathy, perhaps (although less rush would probably have helped), but
you certainly can't blame the software when you do something silly or
don't bother to properly read the question messages it asks - that's
purely "user error".

It said:

The iPhone/iPad "Whatever" is synced with another iTunes library. Do
you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?

An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing
and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of
this iTunes library."

You or your helper clicked "Erase".

And what happened to your backups of the iTunes data from your older
machine? What happened to the older computer itself, with it's data?

As a computer engineer I would have thought such disasters were entirely
preventable by keeping backups and even the old computer around...

Apparently I did it without realizing it. The tech who did the computer
transfer didn't have the iPad itself.
