Is a good question that I can't answer, but live sheep is what the Saudis
want... A halal slaughterhouse in Australia would be no less controversial
than live exports anyway..

There are a lot of places in Australia selling halal meat. Would it be the
scale that would be controversial or is there something about the process (I
plead ignorance)?

The Aus farmers are buying them back. Anyone care to guess how this now
reflects on the Aus populations' opinion of the Islamic world. And all
thanks to the Saudis. Weren't most of those terrorist from this country?

ELIZABETH JACKSON: The Federal Government says that at least 10
countries are being asked to take the shipload of sheep stranded in
the Middle East.

Firstly who gives a **** about 50 000 sheep.

I think the government or whoevers in control of the shipload should stop
playing kiddy games and wipe out the 6% the Saudi's say are diseased and
then sell the ****ing things. Instead they are playing country jumping,

the
people in control of the shipload should grow the **** up and just deliver
non-diseased sheep to the saudi's.

Nope, they are now on their way to Iraq. Since the Iraqis aren't
religious nuts they will gladly eat them

Nope, not the farmers. The governmwent is paying for it. The farmers
didn't sell them to the Saudis, a middle man who maintains feed lots
and pens did. These lots are located in Perth (WA) and Portland (VIC)

In a way it would be the best thing Aus could provide Iraq at the moment.
One less burden for the people.

The media is saying the sheep export industry is paying for it.

"The deal was expected to cost livestock exporters up to $10 million and
could result in a levy on live exports."

"The Age revealed yesterday that industry figures had reluctantly agreed to
buy the sheep back from their Saudi owner for up to $10 million and give
them to Iraq for slaughter at Ramadan. The deal could mean a new levy on
live animal exports, which may be passed on to consumers of red meat."
