Default Where to go in Canada in April/May?

My girlfriend and I are thinking about going to Canada on our honeymoon; we're
getting married late April 2004, so the trip would be the last week of April
and the first week (or so) of May. I'm wondering where a good place would be
to go given:

- It can't be too cold; "too cold" meaning needing to wear a jacket all the
time.
- We want to see wildlife; we are into bird watching, but also like to see
other animals (bears would be good :-) It would be nice to do a guided
wildlife or bird watching tour while we are there, although we don't want to
spend our whole time doing that.
- It needs to be on or near the ocean (either coast is fine, although we live
in California so the west coast is easier).
- Since it's our honeymoon, we'd like to stay at a place somewhat
"extravagant"; not a generic hotel or a cabin with a dirt floor. :-) A
separated cottage-style room is a plus.

Any ideas on an area of Canada to look into? Or specific recommendations of
places to stay? I realize the above criteria might be hard to meet given the
time of year we are going. We might end up going south to Central or South
America.

Thanks!

Carl

Ugh. This is atrocious advice - *especially* for a honeymoon.

Vancouver is very nice and the climate that time of year would suit you,
however I highly doubt you'll view any wildlife.
Niagara Falls is fine for about 1 hour. Past that there is nothing to do in
the falls. You could take trips up the peninsula, and in and around
Niagara-on-the-Lake, but hardly two weeks worth.
May 2-4 in Ontario ? For their honeymoon ? Gimme a break - this is just
stupid.

If you want to head to Ontario (of course nowhere near the ocean), then at
least head to Deerhurst for your extravagance. Included in Muskoka's
extravagant hotels, etc is loads and loads of wildlife in nearby Algonquin
Park.
http://www.deerhurstresort.com/
http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/

On the west coast I would suggest:
Vancouver Island: http://www.hellobc.com/bcescapes/regions/islands.asp
Tofino is one of the nicer places: http://www.wickinn.com/

On the east coast I would suggest Cape Breton Island:
http://www.cbisland.com/index.php
or PEI:
http://www.peionline.com/

Remember - *any* place in Canada that you go in April/May is black fly
season.

Well I'll let a native answer Vancouver proper - but you'll find all
sorts on Vancouver Island.

You just described Vancouver and the coastal area north of it. You could
switch that for, or include, Vancouver Island. It is a quieter scene that
will find you lots of natural wonders and critters to watch. I am certain
that there are any number of quaint "luxury" cottage type accommodations on
the island.

Check out this link
http://www.bcadventure.com/adventure...rks/pacrim.htm

and do an Internet search on Vancouver Island - accommodations, bird
watching etc..

Have fun

No black flies in Vancouver city -- or in any other large city that I know
of.

Birds thrive on black flies so that gives you a lead for your bird watching.

A contact in any of the bird watching clubs in BC would be a good place to
start.

not in northern bc & the yukon, where it can still freeze at the
end of may. i've camped at lake kluane then and woke up to a pot
of water with an ice crust.

black fly season in northern bc & yukon is mid-june to september.

the further north you go, the greater the intensity then, though.
the mckenzie delta & the brooks range really turn into skeeter &
fly hell by mid july.

when they built the pipeline, bulldozer operator had to get out
of their air conditioned (and bug free) cabs and clean several
quarts of insects out of the engine air cleaner every 15 minutes
or so, or they would clog the air intake and kill the engine.

Carl:

Given that you live in CA, the Vancouver area would be a great choice.
The weather in late April, early May is usually pretty good and all
the flowering cherry trees and azealias would be in bloom.
I would suggest a few days in Vancouver and while there a visit to the
Reifel Bird sanctuary in Delta might satisfy your bird watching
desires. Reifel is one of the largest natural bird reserves on the
Pacific flyway and is the home to a tremendous variety of birds.

You might want to consider a couple of days in Whistler. Even if you
are not a skiier, the area is great and the drive up is spectacular --
and if you really want to see bears, take a trip to the Whistler
garbage dump. May will still be skiing season but nearing the end and
you should be able to find accommodation in either a condo or one of
the many hotels.

Then a few days of one of the Gulf Islands that lie between Vancouver
and Vancouver Island. Salt Spring Island is the largest and most
interesting. The Gulf Islands are dry and sunny compared to Vancouver.
For accommodation try Clambeach Cottage or Anne's Oeanfront Hideaway
http://clambeachcottage.com
http://annesoceanfront.com
The town of Ganges on Salt Spring is interesting and the entire island
is an artists colony.

On to Victoria for a few days and if you want a more natural setting
stay in Metchosin or Sooke which are about 30 minutes south west of
the downtown. THE place to stay here is Sooke Harbour House but it is
expensive. The restuarant is rated one of the best in N.A.
If you want expensive and a little extravagant, you could try the
Aerie Resort www.aerie.bc.ca/ which is just north of Victoria.

As some others have mentioned, I would try to spend a fe days in the
Pacific Rim national park area around Tofino. There are lots of places
to stay here and you could chose from a luxury hotel or a cabin on the
beach.

cheers,enjoy

Although you live in California, and thus the suggestions about Canada's west
coast are certainly an efficient (aka cost effective) place for the two of you to
visit, you might also consider Canada's most southerly part:

Point Pelee and Pelee island are south of Windsor and Detroit. If you are into
birding, that place is quite good. A google search found a couple of links:

www.ojibway.ca/birding.htm

www.wincom.net/~fopp/stay.htm

Sorry, but it looks like you will have to type these URLs in. I didn't hot-link
them.

Ken
