Berkeley going car-free sometime in the near future. Its streets will
be shut down to cars and an organization will turn the city into a car-free
city. This is common knowledge in Berkeley and around the San Francisco
region. San Francisco is also going car-free as is San Jose. Portland, Port
Townsend, Washington, and Seattle are also going car-free.

Didn't we just invade Iraq to keep gasoline prices cheap? Car-free ain't
gonna happen.

No, you misunderstand. He meant that cars are going to be free!

This is not a crazy idea. Many cities in Europe have made large parts of
downtown virtually "car-free" already. Den Haag (The Hague) is one example.

As stated it is a crazy idea. The twerp is not talking about a few
blocks of shopping street but, instead, making the entire city car free.
And doing this within this decade.

It is nuts. Even for europe. FFM

Nope. If we did it for anyone's private benefit it's Halliburton.

Gas prices aren't going to fall anytime soon; if it looks like they are,
one of the oil companies will "suffer another fire" at a California
refinery to give them an excuse to raise the price again.

In fairness, the tiny oligopoly of refineries in this state is largely due
to the eco-fiends. I am sure Tosco, Tesoro, or any of the more prominent oil
company refiners would be happy to have more refining capacity so they could
process and sell a larger volume. The real bottleneck in California is
refining capacity.

In 1959, Nikita Khrushchev saw his first U.S. interstate freeway and said he
was shocked by the waste of time, money, and effort. In his country, "there
was little need for such roads because the Soviet people lived close
together, did not care for automobiles, and seldom moved."

My reference wasn't necessarily to the IDEA (although I submit it is
questionable in many cases). Steve Austin habitually posts falsehoods,
typically under the header "Breaking News!!!" stating that a bunch of cities
are about to go car-free, even when there's nothing to that effect, and
others have called him on it. Do a bit of research on the unfounded stuff
this guy habitually posts to this NG if you want the hear (as Paul Harvey
says) "the rest of the story".

Understood.

No problem. Thanks for your understanding. :O)
