Default cheap flights from the US to Australia

Is anyone aware of any good deals for flights to Australia from the US
west coast? I've hunted around on the web for days and don't really
seem to be finding much outside of the standard stuff on offer from the
major airlines and web-based travel companies like TravelZoo. I'm
taking my American wife and our two children down under in the not too
distant future so they can see my homeland for the first time, and as
things stand the fares for all four of us are really going to add up to
one big bill! (And yes, I have looked at the Qantas deal that includes
three internal flights, but at the time of year we want to go, and
where we also want to fly internally, we're better off looking for a
straight up fare from LA and then just hoofing it ourselves within
Australia via the cheap flights on offer from the likes of Virgin
Blue.)

Coming the other way I know you used to be able to get a really great
deal from the likes of JAL because the flight nesssitated an overnight
stay - courtesy of the airline - in Tokyo, which was okay by me.But
there just doesn't seem to be any real bargain-basement equivalents on
offer from the USA.

Anyone have any information they'd like to share?

Tim

There have been some promotions lately for Oz-Hawai, as Hawaian airlines
have enterred the market. Have you tried ex-Hawai, and a discount internal
fare within the US?

It looks like OZ has become just too popular! I just learned that
United is increasing the cost of frequent flyer flights by 20,000 for
flights from the US to OZ.
