Default Getting from Bangkok to Hong Kong

We need to get from Bangkok to Hong Kong in the middle of January, and the
cheapest airline seems to be Air Asia.
They have routes to both Macau and Shenzhen, but not directly to Hong Kong.
From what I can tell both these cities are relatively close to Hong Kong,
and the prices are the same.

My question is, which one of these two cities would be easiest if we want to
get to Hong Kong as quickly and with as little hassle as possible?

Thanks,
HH

They are pretty comparable. I think from Shenzhen airport you have
direct links to HK via bus or boat, whereas from Macau you'll have to
get from the airport to the boat terminal.

Oh I forgot, if you are going to Shenzhen you may have to get a
Chinese visa, and added expense and hassle.

Thank you very much for answering.

It seems like Macau is the right choice.
No visas necessary here, right?

Correct. No visa necessary for Norwegian citizens - see

From Macau airport you can get a bus to the ferry terminal and a high speed
catamaran will have you in HK in about an hour.

For someone needing to get to HK, I wonder whether the savings made on
the flight would justify the extra time and hassle of flying to Macau
and transferring. Air Asia may be the cheapest, but there are other
low-cost airlines that fly to HK. For example, Orient Thai fly direct
from Bangkok to Hong Kong.

Perhaps not a fix for the problem but I would keep my eye on the Cathay
Pacific website; go to the top right and select hong kong english. Click
and play and watch. Characteristically they change their deals on or near
the 1st each month..some are ongoing. Their best stuff is from base Hong
Kong round trip but I'd just keep watching and clicking until you feel you
have to secure some tickets somewhere.
Also, they have some pretty cute hotel deals from time to time that are hard
to match.

Thanks, I'm looking for the right hotel in Hong Kong and
that site initially looked brilliant for prices for CX
travelers. I'll be flying in and out with Cathay and I
noticed most of the listed hotels include a shuttle to at
least the city terminal of the train to the airport, or a
direct shuttle to the airport.

However, it looked a little less brilliant once I re-read
that prices quoted are per person per night.

The estimated "prices from" are based on a single person in
a "Share Twin", sharing with another. So you need to double
them for a room, or use the "Single Room" price if you are
alone.

Not a problem once you know the rules, but something to be
aware of when comparing to Asiarooms, Agoda,
priceline.com.hk etc.

Cheers, Alan, Australia
