Looking to head up the bloomfield track in mid september from
Port to Cooktown, any links that give descriptions and way points of this trip and what would be the actual driving time (am hiring a 4wd to undertake the trip) regards Andrew |

Andrew,
I have driven Cooktown to Douglas in a Land Rover Discovery sometime 2004. It is an easy drive but there are some very steep sections. Douglas to Cape Tribulation is all sealed. Tribulation and North is unsealed and for 4X4 only. The Disco uses an Electronic Traction Control system that makes it easy for climbing. None of the climbs required lower than first gear high range. Descents are another matter. Some drops are significant when you are trying to brake. Often the wheels will slip even with ABS. I suggest you treat the descents with great respect and use low range to come down the steep ones. I should mention that many of the the climbs/descents have concrete pads or tracks for traction in wetter weather. Don't be fooled; there is often gravel scattered on the concrete and it just makes it more slippery, even in dry conditions. As for things to see, I know of no URLs to help out there. The Lions Den Hotel at the northern end of the track may be worth a stop. We didn't bother. The Wujul Wujul community just North of the Bloomfield River crossing is a "dry" community. Take notice of the road-side warning notices before entering the precincts. Take time driving and the dirt track can be traversed very quickly. It isn't difficult to miss much. Stop often and you might see that "shot of a lifetime". Have fun. Ross "afisher" wrote in message ups.com...
