Ringing in the New Year at China's temples

I was watching the news and the masses of Chinese in Shanghai waiting
patiently to ring the huge temple bell were all wearing yellow (buddhist-y)
scarves. Given the large number of Chinese visitors, are these scarves
recycled? Do the wearers give them back to the temple before leaving the
temple or did they buy them?

Also, are there vendors INSIDE the temple who are selling the paper wishes
to hang on trees?

I don't know about inside specifically. But definitely somewhere around the
temples.
