Default Hooking up digital cameras in internet cafes

Hi,

I plan to take my digital camera with me on my travels over the next
few months but could someone please tell whether internet cafes allow
you to hook up your camera to their terminals to upload the images
onto a website?

What's the easiest way to go about doing this and do I need to take my
software with me?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

I am almost certain that few Internet cafes will let you install software. I
have been told that newer cameras do not require special software.
But I have a suggestion. Search the web for internet cafes that are in the
cities you plan to visit. Then ask them.

Many photograpy stores will now burn CDs for you.

I'm sure, it will vary from area to area. We travelled in South-east Asia
this year and in half of the cafes we asked it would have been possible -
if my camera would be more compilant to the storage device standard. Most
modern cameras identify themself as a "storage class device" and WinXP
accepts them as a external harddisk with no additional drivers (most - but
not mine :-(

Older versions like Win98 still need a USB driver. Some cafes allowed me to
install a driver, but this is very uncommon and takes a long time if you
don't have the driver cd with you.

Uploading some downscaled pictures from a CD is always possible if you can
use a web form for uploading. ftp is not always availiable. But remember
the available bandwidth - in asia it is very common to have only a singe
56k line for 10 to 20 computers. Uploading a total of more than 1MB would
last for ages and is virtualy impossible here.

Yes, it is better to be prepared. Carry the driver CD for your camera with
you.

But it is very common to give them your flash-cards and let them burn a CD
for you. Many internet cafes, computer shops, fotoshops and even some
guesthouses offer this service for a reasonable fee (2..6US$ per CD). Often
you will be charged by the number of storage medias, not by the data
volume. So burning four 128MB cards is four times more expensive then
burning a single 512MB card.

Some shops charge very high prices like 2US$ for the CD-R. If you bring your
own CD-R it can be much cheaper and you know about the quality of the
media.

We always burned two copies and carried them in diffent backpacks to
minimize the risk of loosing our pictures. This additional investment paid
off at the end as one of the CDs had some small defects and was unreadable
after a few weeks in the tropical humidity down there.
