SYD to MELB
What would be the most economical way to go from Sydney to Melbourne
I am planning a short trip and wish to know if BUS is the best option or should I take the TRAIN Since it is at short notice, flights will be expensive. |

Expensive is obviously a relative term, but there's flight from Sydney to Melbourne tomorrow (5th) available for $112, or on Thursday for $105. If you're happy to end up at Avalon (55 kms out of Melborune, $16 for the bus to Melbourne) then it drops to $79. Yes, probably still more expensive than a bus, but not by much... Scott. |

I agree with Scott. Unless you're a bus or train devotee - take the plane. Greyhound is $70, and takes 13+ hours overnight. http://www.greyhound.com.au/booking/availability.asp Firefly is $65 and appears to be a little quicker, about 12 hours. http://www.fireflyexpress.com.au/ Train is $105 and the same time as the bus - but a bloody sight more comfortable. http://www.countrylink.info/ Do a little checking on these links below (remember Virgin goes to Avalon, a long way west of town) and you'll find fares competitive with those and you'll be there in an hour plus to/from airport time and check-in time. Be aware that these cut-price fares have some catches - the most important one is that with Jetstar (and also Virgin Blue?) you absolutely MUST be checked in 30 minutes prior to flight time or your ticket is cancelled. There is a train from the city to Sydney Airport ($11 IIRC) and there is a "Skybus" from Tullamarine to the city - forgotten the fare, under $15. http://www.jetstar.com/ http://www.virginblue.com.au/ http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn...fier-region-au Cheers, Alan, Australia |

avalon is Not a long way west of town, there are 10-12 shuttles a day,
between Avalon Werribee Flinders street station Geelong, No further SouthWest than Tulla is NorthWest, but sure seems like a long way if you hitch hike -- like fu_ a porcupine 1000 pri_ks against one _ "Alan S" wrote in message ... I drove cabs in Melbourne, and still have mates down there in the cab game. Thay LOVE VirginBlue customers who need a cab to Avalon from Ferntree Gully (cab fare often much higher than plane fa-) I also spent many years at Laverton in my RAAF apprentice days, and even then considered Avalon as somewhere way out west.
