Hello Marc,

I'm writing you this email as you are living in Gauteng and contributed many
usefull postings on rec.travel.africa so I presume you will be willing to
help...

I have people using my Land Rover which is based in Honeydew, Johannesburg
and i'm looking to make arrangements for them to be picked up from the
airport and brought to where the Landy is stationed.

This usually costs around 250 to 300 Rand one-way which was OK for us. But
now I'm told that they will be charged 450 Rand One-way! This looks to me a
bit to high.

My question is:

What will it cost 4 people with their luggage to be transfered from Jo'Burg
international to the Honeydew area (usually a 45 min. carride)

Hi Hans,

R450 seems a bit steep. I'll make some enquiries, but I'd expect around R250
to R300. When are they arriving?

Regards,
Marc

I just contacted AA Metrocab. They are the most professional bunch, with
well appointed and well maintained vehicles. The drivers are properly
screened too. They will charge R420 for 4 passengers from OR Tambo Int'l to
Honeydew before 9pm, and R510 after 9pm. The vehicle will be an Opel Zafira
minivan. All the stories I've heard about AA Metrocab have been positive,
although I've never used them myself.

If AA Metrocab is charging R420 for their minivan, then you should be able
to find cheaper somewhere else.

NEVER use the taxi touts who hang out at the airport. They're a bunch of
criminals with unroadworthy vehicles. There's a chance that they'll inform
their friends if you're carrying expensive luggage, and be "hijacked". My
life has been threatened after I tried to get some touts removed from the
airport building. There is a legal taxi company operating from the airport,
but they are not allowed to tout for business at all. I once overheard a
tout telling an international visitor that the normal cost of a trip to
Sandton was R1000, but he'd take the visitor for only R600. I interupted and
told the visitor that the tout was illegal and I showed him to a legal taxi
where he was quoted R270.

I'll try to find some more info tomorrow.

As you know, early July will be cold, and coming from sunny Europe will be a
bit of a shocker ;-)

Best use a taxi with a heater :-)

Winters in southern Africa are lovely. Warm and sunny during the day and
cool nights to sleep well. The perfect climate for me! :-)

Hans

Hans, winters in the northern parts of SA are really nice. Johannesburg can
get bitterly cold at night (well below zero), and places like the central
Free State, and the Karoo are even colder.

I've met several people from Cape Town in Kenya in July because
(according to them) the weather is so bad in Cape Town then.

I suppose it all depends what you're used to.
