The insurance that the chap at the border was trying to sell you IS actually mandatory. It is not insurance for the vehicle as such (which is covered by the rental company) but third-party road insurance. Most, if not all, countries in Southern and East Africa have a mandatory third-party insurance fee. In COMESA countries there is a "Yellow Card" that covers all COMESA countries. Marc, thanks for the info. According to the rental company we got the 4x4 from, they have a company wide Third Party Insurance which also covers Zambia. So according to them we did not need any additional insurance when bringing their vehicle into Zambia. And indeed the Zambian police was friendly. Just did the same crossing and on the wall in immigrations there was a clear
sign saying that the 3rd party insurance was not mandatory, but that it was strongly recommended. It also explained the difference between different 3rd party insurances on offer. Again the officials were very friendly. (Hans: see trip report on www.4xforum.com ) Cheers, -Paal "Hans Martens" wrote in message l... On the recent trip, I didn't list the items for re-export and was mildly rebuked for not doing so - but not required to alter the form. I'm curious as to what the real requirement is. Does anyone out there know? Michael, As you know I've done a number of trips to South Africa over the past couple of years. Custom officials have never asked me any questions about my photo equipment on entry, or exit, from South Africa. I guess you met a customs official who took his/her job a bit too seriously, or I've just been very lucky in the past. Cheers, Arnoud |
