Forgotten promise

After announcing his decision to launch a 24x7 helpline
for the safety and assistance of tourists, including
foreigners, early this year with much fanfare, Union
Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi is silent about its fate.
Except issuing statements after every crime reported
against a foreigner, the Minister has not spoken a word
on the status of the helpline that was proposed to be
kicked off from April.

Tourist travel to india is down 25 percent because of the epidemic of
gangrapes.

Those outsiders who must go there and/or can afford it are hiring body
gaurds.

It will not change with new people in government unless the approach is to
change the basic mentallity toward women.

This includes the police taking seriously the charge of rape and protecting
the victim. Then perhaps the 60 percent of rapes that go unreported will
change.
