Can I use a UK Visa debit (not credit) card in a NYC ATM? It has the UK LINK
logo on it, but no others. If so, is there usually a commission charge? I
have have had no problems using this card across Europe.

TIA

For the most authoritative answer, call the bank that issued the
card to ask. You might also ask the bank about any processing fees
for using the card in a foreign country. If the fees seem high, shop
around for a card that has lower, or no, rates.

Yes, look for ATM's with the PLUS sign

logo on it, but no others. If so, is there usually a commission charge? I

The charge is the same as in Europe, typically around
1.5%. Be aware that some US ATM operators may charge
a local fixed fee varying between $1.50 and $5

Why would there be a charge if he uses it at a bank? Isn't that up to his
issuing institution?

no. banks often have a significant charge for non-bank users.
it's usually posted on the ATM.

ATMs in store that are not bank ATMs often have unconscionably
high charges.

Because some US banks surcharge holders of cards with accounts
at other banks. For the most part this doesnt apply to foreign
issued cards but I have run across the occasional one that does.

The point being made though is that those ATM's you find in
gas stations and convenience stores often have very high charges.

I've used UK Visa and MasterCards all over the US with only a few
hitches. I would agree that the best (ie cheapest) places to use it
are at the the banks, Banks' stand alone ATM's (something we don't
have over here) or Bank's ATMs in the bigger stores and supermarkets.

FWIW I try to use Bank of America as I've had no problem with them,
there's plenty of them and they're easy to see.

Fees work out at ~ 1.5% and the exchange rate is usually better than
the quoted tourist rate on the day.

There won't be a commission charge if you use a Nationwide Building Society
debit card. The same applies to their credit cards (saves 2.75%).

As far as I know LINK doesn't work but MAESTRO does! However last
night on TV there was an ad, suggesting that the two had joined
forces!!
My husband has used his Maestro debit card OK in the States but I
can't use my LINk up till now----------might be worth checking at your
bank--------I am, as we are off to NYC next sunday ( hopefully, as the
CO flight from Glasgow was cancelled today because of a threat:-(
