san francisco from SFO
How can I get my hotel (Van Ness) from San Francisco Int.l Airport? (I am
travelling with the whole family and the grandma so we are a party of 6.) Grazie Federica |

With that many people and a Grandma, I would set up riding in a shuttle
van. Contact your hotel and they should be able to set it up for you. It will cost a little bit but be well worth it. The only other option would be to get there by Bus, but that depends on what kind of shape your Grandma is in. The trains/cable cars run throughout the city, but don't go right up to Van Ness, so that would be a lot of walking on those hilly streets. We were there last Summer for the 4th of July and had a delightful time. Babs Freddy wrote: How can I get my hotel (Van Ness) from San Francisco Int.l Airport? However with six people this might end up almost as expensive as taking a shuttle, and certainly less comfortable. .... Martin |

A lot of hotels in San Francisco do not have shuttle service. There are
a lot of shuttles available at the airport- but note that these are upstairs from where you come out of customs. Still, if you have more than 2 people, I actually think it is more convenient and cheaper to take a taxi. In this case, unless a taxi van is available, you will need 2 taxis. A taxi to Van Ness (which does not have any hills, by the way) will cost ~$34 (not including a tip to the driver). Still, if you prefer to drive together, you can come out of customs and go to the left to look for the escalator to go upstairs (where the airline departure desks are located). Exit the front doors and cross the road to get to the median strip. Here you will find many shuttles where they will ask where you are going and how many people need a ride. The most well known service is Super Shuttle- they are the dark blue vans. Normally, they wait until their van is full (or partially full) before they leave. However, in your case, you will just about fill the van anyway. This should cost you ~$75 (not including tip to driver). You can look at Super Shuttle's website: http://www.supershuttle.com/ Simone |

The other options (Super Shuttle, BART, etc., are ,much less expensive for an individual traveller, but for six people, two taxis will be fine. You could get a stretch limo for about $75, not including tip. http://www.sfcapitol.com/price.htm |

Although I don't know, I believe you can get a transfer that will be good on an electric bus up Van Ness Avenue to your hotel. The Jack Tar/Cathedral Hlll's on the other side of the street. The Holiday Inn's on the side you'll be. Contact your hotel and they should be able to set it up for you. The trains/cable cars run throughout the city They do? News t'me! but don't go right up to Van Ness, The California Street Cable Car DOES go to Van Ness Avenue. Well, about fifty feet from it. so that would be a lot of walking on those hilly streets. Hilly streets? Van Ness Avenue? Well, maybe the last two blocks going down to Aquatic Park but there are no hotels on those blocks. We were there last Summer for the 4th of July and had a delightful time. Your visit demonstrably made you a non-authority. __________________________________________________ _________________ Un San Francisqueño en San Francisco. http://geocities.com/dancefest/ - http://geocities.com/iconoc/ ICQ: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/19098103 --- IClast at SFbay Net |

You can get a discount coupon (from a machine at the BART station exit) which is good for 25c off the standard MUNI fare. See http://www.sfmuni.com/cms/mms/fares/fareinfo.htm#other .... Martin |

I never said I was an expert. I was just trying to share my experience.

if you have more than 2 people, I actually think it is
more convenient and cheaper to take a taxi. Yes, a taxi can actually be *cheaper* than a shuttle or train if several people are travelling together. On shuttle or train each person must buy a ticket, but a taxi charges a flat rate. Plus it's usually a lot faster. (Of course if your hotel offers a free shuttle, you might want to take that.) But as someone else mentioned, you'd probaby need a taxi van or else 2 taxis, considering the size of your group. Jim |
