Coral Princess/9-13-03/Review-LONG
Coral Princess 9-13-03 to 9-16-03 Vancouver to Los Angeles at Sea.
The following is a review of a 3 day coastal cruise segment of a 17 day repositioning cruise from Vancouver to Ft. Lauderdale. I wanted to do a "test run" on the Coral Princess to see if I wanted to book her for a 10 day cruise 2004 with a partial transit of the Panama Canal. The 3 day seemed a perfect fit. There were four of us - 2 to a cabin. If you are only interested in the cruise portion of our trip than please skip 9-11-03 and 9-12-03. 9-11-03 We initially flew from Los Angeles to Seattle on free tickets and arrived at SEATAC. I wanted to fly on 9-11 to be defiant of terrorism. My family lost four souls in the towers attack. I went to ground transportation services and it turned out that a Lincoln stretch limo was the same price as a cab to the Sheraton Seattle Hotel downtown. We were fortuanate that both rooms were available for check-in at 11:00 AM. A large group of people were just boarding a bus to take them to the port. HAL has an info desk in this hotel. We were lucky to get a great rate in this 4 star hotel independently. It was lightly raining on and off throughout the day but we used the Gray Line Trolley with unlimited on/off stops. The tickets are good for 2 days. We had a great meal that evening in a restaurant recommended by the concierge. 9-12-03 We took the trolley and went to Pikes Market Place and had a nice breakfast and did some additional sightseeing. Bought a couple of gifts and went back to the hotel. Amtrak has train service only once a day to Vancouver at 7:45 AM. Amtrak gives Triple A and senior citizen discounts. This was too early for us so we had prebooked passage through Amtrak website for bus service to Vancouver at 1:15 PM. It was only a $5 cab ride to the Amtrak station. I WILL NEVER TAKE BUS SERVICE AGAIN FROM SEATTLE TO VANCOUVER. I understood that it was a long trip but I did not realize how much of a pain it would really be. At the border our poor bus driver had to unload every piece of luggage that he had put on for us in Seattle. We had to take our luggage in a line for our bus through Canadian customs. We reboarded the bus. The driver reloaded our luggage. One person was detained at the border and was not allowed to proceed with us. We arrived in Vancouver at 5:20 PM. A short cab ride delivered us to the Westin Bayshore Hotel in view of Canada Place. We got a great rate of $86 US thanks to the exchange rate for each of two rooms. However, when we checked in there were no rooms available facing Canada Place. Our view was still very nice facing the marina and Stanley Park. We spent some time along the shoreline including a decent meal about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. 9-13-03 I woke up early due to the excitement of the impending ship boarding. As I walked out of the hotel I saw the HAL Zaandam and Coral Princess at Canada Place. I walked the approximately 20 minutes to Canada Place and walked around the observation areas viewing both ships and trying to locate our 2 cabins on Emerald deck. From this vantage point I could also see Ballantyne Pier where there was an RCCI ship and another ship in the background that I could not identify. On the walk back I stopped at a little market and bought some fruit and breakfast items along with some coke and pepsi to take onboard. Upon entering the hotel there was a Princess check-in area. We had booked everything independently but I thought I would see if we could do a pre-check in. They did not have our boarding cards but did offer to have the bellman pick-up our luggage from our rooms for transportation to the ship for free. They also offered me transportation to the ship on their bus. I accepted the luggage service but advised that we would just take a cab to the port. I went back to the room and told everyone to pack. In only 15 minutes our luggage was picked up. At 11:30 AM we took a cab to Canada Place. All four of us had Platinum Express Check-in and we had our boarding cards in our hands in less than 10 minutes. Both my Mom and her friend needed wheel chairs for the initial boarding because we knew there would be a long line for US customs and boarding. My Mom can not stand in long lines for very long without passing out from a medical condition. Two ship stewards had wheel chairs within minutes of checking in and we were whisked away. We were onboard in our our cabins at 12:10 pm. We were very fortuanate in that we had originally booked two inside cabins in "J" category and were upgraded to outside cabins with balconies. My first impression of the ship upon entering was how clean and colorful the ship was. The "Coral" theme runs throughout the ship with colors of aqua, blues, oranges, yellows and greens. Cabin Review Our cabins were aft on Emerald deck. These balcony cabins are totally protected overhead and have larger balconies than the same cabins forward. They were about 6x9 instead of 4 1/2x9 forward. I just wish that Princess would have at least one chaise lounge on these larger balconies than those cheap white plastic chairs that they have. The actual cabin was comparable to what I had in February on the Star Princess. HOWEVER, the shower was the smallest enclosure that I have had on ANY ship that I can remember in my almost 60 cruises to date. We all liked the colorful bedspreads and contrasting "wood" trim in the cabins. We were concerned that we might hear a lot of noise from the Universe lounge below us. However, we heard VERY little music from below. For a Panama Canal cruise I would recommend the last cabin aft on either side as the plexiglass curves aft instead of a solid wall which results in a full view outwards and a partial view aft. Our cabin stewardess brought us robes and ice was already in the fridge. Public Rooms and Areas Overall, we liked the decor. There were vibrant pieces of art throughout the ship that represented the Caribbean. I have been on several Princess ships over the years and there were many firsts onboard the Coral. Music and Dancing I have nicknamed the Coral Princess The Ship of Music. There were two quartets, one trio, one soloist, one pianist and the Coral Princess orchestra with seven members onboard. There were four dedicated dance floors on this ship. There was a dance floor in the following rooms: Wheelhouse Bar , Bayou Cafe, Explorers Lounge and Universe Lounge along with impromptu dancing in the Crooner's Bar. There was music playing in the Atrium, poolside and Horizon Court many times throughout the day. Food and Dining Venues Upon boarding we went for lunch at the Horizon Court. I had pizza. The pizza is by the slice and served poolside. I still prefer the dedicated pizzerias on the Sun class and a few other PCL ships where you can order an individual pizza from a menu. However, the pizza offered on the Coral Princess was excellent. Everybody else enjoyed the offerings on the buffet. PCL still only serves ice tea, water and coffee in the Horizon Court. I have complained loudly that they should at least serve lemonade, without any results. There are two large single level dining rooms. One is for traditional dining and the other is for Personal Choice dining. We were PC dining. We ate twice for dinner in Bordeaux Dining Room. The first night we had an excellent waiter and assistant. They worked together as one. The second night the waiter and assistant were average. The food was highly acceptable but just above average at best. I have eaten in Sabatini's onboard the Star Princess and enjoyed it very much. However, The Coral Princess has the first Cajun restaurant in the fleet called the Bajou Cafe. Since I was born in Louisiana and enjoy Cajun cooking we could not pass this chance up. Pricing is now $10 for the Bayou cafe and $20 for Sabitini's. We had reservations for 7:30 PM. There is a good size dance floor in which there was a singer/piano player performing until 8 PM. It really got going when a trio from New Orleans started at 8 PM. They played blues/jazz music with true soul. The food was excellent but a couple of dishes were a little to spicey for the ladies in our group. The Oysters Bienville was top notch. The sausage and gator appetizers were very good. We had an assortment of entrees from a steak dish to grilled prawns. The side dishes were maw maw slaw, fried green tomatoes, soccatash, jonny cakes, cornbread and rolls. For dessert I had sweet potato pie (which was lacking in spice) but the others enjoyed their apple dishes. We had room service each morning for breakfast. One morning I had added boiled eggs on the card for delivery the next morning. They were delivered with the rest of the order. We had a different room server each morning. The overall food presentation onboard was well done. The sushi one day for lunch was nice (I wish they would offer Japanese beers onboard - they do not in U.S. cruises). Two of my mates had the lamb which they enjoyed. However, I continue to see a decline in the dining room food, a status quo in the buffets and excellent service and food in the extra tariff dining rooms. The extra tariff dining rooms are troubling because I do feel the ships' emphasis is to charge for better quality and intentionally serve lower quality in the normal dining rooms. Princess Theater This is one of two main showrooms with excellent individual seating with unobstructed views from almost all of the seats. There were fullsize movies shown here at different times of the cruise along with production-type shows. Atrium This atrium is four decks and decorated beautifully. We liked the marble, running water and "coral-seaweed" artwork cascading all four decks along the glass elevators. Wheelhouse Bar Richly decorated in many dark woodtones with multiple seating areas in rich fabrics and leathers. The main entry way has dramatic wood flooring along with ship memorabilia and fantastic artwork. However, the room did not have walled off alcoves creating intimate spaces. This created an appearance of one large cavernous room. Explorers Lounge Very nice room with rich colors and a stage. Bingo, art auctions and other forms of entertainment are held here. This is the equivalent of their disco. Universe Lounge This room is a major departure for Princess in that it is a two story showroom versus one story on other Princess ships. The technology used in this showroom for stage movement, lighting and music was the best I had seen on any PCL ship. However, there were many poor sightlines from both levels. It appeared that the technological improvements were the priority with the seating as an afterthought. What a shame. Library and Card rooms. On The "Grand" class ships you need to walk through one of the extra tariff restaurants to proceed fore to aft on deck. That is not the case onboard the Coral Princess. However, on this ship you must walk through the library or card rooms. They are nicely decorated and there were MANY games, cards and books to choose from. Both of these rooms were used heavily by the passengers. Casino The casino onboard is the first "themed" casino per PCL representing an English pub atmoshere. There are English guardsman "protecting" the entrance. There was one passenger who won a $5,000 jackpot. We all gave our donations. Gym Aft on Lido deck with excellent water views and good equipment. Lotus Spa None of us partook of the services on this short trip but the decor was nicely done with many of the outrageously priced services available. Pool Areas The Lido pool area was dull in its decor and uninspiring. There was a good amount of lounge chairs, drink services and hot tubs. The Lotus pool area with roof enclosure was decorated with Mayan influences and much nicer than the Lido pool. Other Items Noted 1.The express check-in and preferred boarding for Platinum members. 2.The cushion covered chaise lounges on the wood promenade deck. 3.The television offering that Princess has is excellent. 4.The Platinum Club reserved area in the Princess Showroom with coffee, tea and rolls while watching CNN waiting to leave the ship. 5.The free internet service to Platinum members. We all thoroughly enjoyed this mini-cruise. Since it was part of a much longer repositioning cruise there was none of the nonsense that you see on the normal 3-4 day party ships. In conclusion, we were very pleased with this ship compared to other modern newbuilds and will definitely go on her again, probably in Fall 2004. Steve Hayes |
