x-no-archive: yes
Can anybody recommend a good place to do a checkup of a used car before buying ? Is there some kind of standardized NMRA test or something ? What would be an estimated price for this check ? Please help, we dont know anything about cars. Thanks mate! |

Everyone does (or should do) this. central sydney (ie the business district) isn't exactly a hot bed of car selling. Nearest is Williams St (on the way to Kings Cross) it had a lot of car yards when I lived in Sydney. A good place is Paramatta Rd (it's quite long), look in the papers. There's a lot of used cars 1-2 yrs old that seem to have come out of car rental businesses. These are usually in good cosmetic shape and have had routine maintenance. They are also expensive, but probably reasonable value. I buy all my cars used from people, but this takes a little while. If you're visiting, you probably don't have time to look, but then you've got to sell it when you go too. Do you know how you're going to get rid of it? You can't sell a car overnight. Make sure as part of buying a car that it passes rego. Most older cars go off the road (are junked) because they won't pass, not because they aren't roadworthy. Yes NRMA will come to you and test on site for a fee. How long do you
intend on keeping the car? Some cheaper yards will do guarenteed buybacks if kept in good nick, albeit at a greatly reduced price you are guarenteed a sale. When I enquired for a travelling friend from NZ a Brisbane yard quoted me a sale price of $2500 for a 85 Mazda 626 with a guarenteed buyback of $800 after 6 months. Not bad really seeing as he had to wantentee it unconditionally for the first month.Try hire a car for that long for $1700. He also said that he would pay up to $1200 if it was in just as good a condition as when sold. Theres a public car park that has backpackers and travellers selling their cars that they may have had up to a year. Usually get a bargain there if you willing to wait for one. We waited till a couple that was selling an XE wagon was getting strapped for cash and I could see that it was in good condition under the road grime. Bought it for $3000 when it was selling in Tradepost for similar cars at $4000. Ended up selling it a year later for $3300 so made money surprisingly. Beware that some come with VERY dodgey roadworthies so go in with very wide eyes. and if your intending on selling back in the same state make sure you dont buy one with out of state plates. Located at Gazebo end of Kings cross from memory (was a while ago) but freinds say that it was there last year going fine. Hope that helps.
