Taxi fare in Melbourne. Cheaper to rent a car?
Can someone please give me an idea of the fare for a Taxi from
Tullamarine Airport to Ringwood for 2 people? I want to rent a car at some stage during my stay in Melbourne. I'm just wondering if it would be cheaper to rent a car from day 1 at the airport. My only worry is, I only need a car for 2 days, but I might be too tired after the flight from the UK to make much use of it straight away, but if the Taxi will be extortionate then it might be worth renting. I need to know before I arrive so I could possible book the car now to save a few =A3. Thanks |

Could also depend upon what part of the week you need the car. My folks live
out in Glen Waverley, a similar distance to Ringwood from Tullamarine and it was much cheaper to rent a car than catch a taxi. This was a weekend rate. "William South" wrote in message ups.com... With inflation I would guess at something closer to $80-100 now. The trip should take about 40 minutes subject to traffic. You will definitely not feel like driving immediately after flying in from the UK. Incidentally, in Melbourne the number of passengers (up to four) is irrelevant - there is no difference in fare. If you have five passengers you'll need to specify that when booking a cab because only about 10% of the cars are set up for front bench seats. Cheers, Alan -- |

ups.com... I need to know before I arrive so I could possible book the car now to save a few £. How much of a priority is time vs money? If you *really* want to save money, there are cheaper ways, such as Skybus ($13 per adult) plus train ($7.10 per adult) = $40.20 for two. Or depending on time of day you arrive, there's even the infrequent slow local bus plus trains ($7.10 per adult) = $14.20 total. (See http://www.custard.net.au/melbtrans/airport.asp - but you need a more expensive ticket than listed there.) I second what Alan said - not many people feel like driving after a flight
from the UK! It is a case of considering your own $ versus risk threshold ... and whether or not you can sleep on a long-haul flight. There is the airport bus as well - timetable on website. http://www.airportbus.com.au/airport.html We booked a chauffeur driven car for an early morning trip to the airport last year. Much more reliable, comfortable & cleaner than a taxi (apologies to all the taxi drivers out there, but this guy did turn up at 4:15am - 15 minutes early, never experienced that with a taxi). Turned out to be around the same price as a taxi - maybe $10-15 more. Think it should cost around $70-80 to Ringwood - beware, there are some companies that charge a lot more! You obviously never rang me:-) Melbourne has several groups of "executive" cabs, similar to the Sydney "Silver Service" cabs, which charge taxi fare but give quality service, usually in better class cars such as Ford LTD/Fairlane or Holden Staesman. I used to drive one of them. I must admit, I didn't enjoy meeting people off the international flights at Tullamarine - always arriving in the wee small hours, then your customer was always the last one out of customs. Dead time with the meter off. But the service is available; sorry, I don't know any current phone numbers. Cheers, Alan -- |

Thank you for all the replies.
I have decided it's going to be cheaper to rent a car for the duration of my stay. I am trying to book online on the Budget site, but it is asking what airport I will pick it up from. There is more than one option. MELBOURNE APT INTER VIC MELBOURNE APT QF/JS VIC I am flying with Qantas. Does Qantas have their own arrival terminal. I will be arriving at Termial I (letter i) My flight number begins with QF so I am guessing I need to select the QF/JS option, but I need to be sure before I book. Thanks in advance for any help. p.s. What's the current average price of petrol per litre in Melbourne? |

Melbourne Airport is the only international in the state of Victoria., (
also known as Tullamarine) All airlines terminals are in one building. The international arrivals/departures area is between the two domestic arrival/dep areas. Budget have a desk at both the INTER and the QF/JS (qantas/jetstar) areas. So, you will find that both Budget desks are not really far apart, and in same building. However, as you exit customs, INTER is the closest. Hope this helps Big Kev -- Email - drop the second "s" in "travsubs" "William South" wrote in message oups.com... Thank you for all the replies.
