Default Notice from TSA regarding air travel

…..No doubt you have heard that we are now on a level orange security at
the airports in the USA and level red for commercial flights from the UK
to the USA. If you have not heard and wonder why then just turn on the
news or check out your favorite website for news like CNN or Fox News.
Many of you may have trips coming up this weekend or in the next few
weeks and may wonder what does this all mean to you. First of all we
can't let a small group of idiot terrorists win and that means we keep
traveling and let them know we are not going to let them scare us into
hiding. Travel is a right of free people and we will not let these
terrorists win. So with that in mind here are some tips to consider when
heading out to the airport on your next trip.

Please be aware of the U.S. threat level has been raised to the highest
level of "severe," or red, for commercial flights originating in the
United Kingdom bound for the United States, according to the Department
of Homeland Security. In addition, the threat level has been raised to
"high," or orange for all commercial flights operating in or coming to
the United States, the DHS said.

Our advise it that you must arrive at the airport two and one half hours
prior to international departures. In some cases, check in will take
almost all of that time! All bags are undergoing extra screening.

Regarding carry on luggage:

* At this time, flights to /from London are the only ones affected
by the "No Carry On" policy mentioned on the news this morning. This
would include laptops and any carry on item. I am not sure if this
covers all purses or just the larger ones but it is something ladies
need to consider. Note this policy may get extended to other airports as
we move forward.
* On all other flights, NO liquids or gels such as hairspray, hair
gel/mouse, toothpaste/mouthwash, suntan lotions, various creams /lotions
etc are being allowed in your carry on. Guests may also be asked to
finish or dispose of all beverages before getting on the plane. "Due to
the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation, we are
prohibiting any liquids, including beverages, hair gels, and lotions
from being carried on the airplane," a DHS statement said. So finish all
liquid refreshments (e.g. water, soda, etc.) before proceeding to
security. The exceptions a baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a
baby or small child is traveling; prescription medicine with a name that
matches the passenger_s ticket; and insulin and essential other
non-prescription medicines. Pack all liquid-based substances, such as
hair gel, lotion, shampoo, cream, non-prescription liquids (e.g. contact
lens solution, eye drops, etc.) and toothpaste in your checked baggage.
* Electronics are also being highly scrutinized. If you are in a
hurry, you may consider forgoing the Ipod, DVD player, etc... at least
for the next couple of weeks.
* Perfumes and body sprays will be confiscated! It is highly
flameable liquid. Please put them in your checked luggage. For those
of you that use expensive potions, you may want to consider purchasing a
travel size / purse size bottle for your trip.
* British police are also banning passengers from carrying
electronic key fobs, which have the potential to trigger bombs. These
would be the remote gadgets on your car key which you use to lock and
unlock your car. Expect other countries to possibly follow this example.

Check with your air carrier well before your flight departs for
information on when you should arrive at the airport. On your day of
departure, check your departing airport_s Web site for any reported new
security delays.

Cooperate with TSA personnel at all checkpoints and gates as TSA may
require a secondary screening of carry-on baggage at the gate.

Be attentive and report any suspicious activity to the nearest TSA Officer.

DHS has provided no indication of when, or if, these measures would be
rescinded. Details can be found at:
http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/threat-change.shtm.

Default Notice from TSA regarding air travel

Is this how the TSA expect us to turn up at the airport?

When will they realize that their reaction is often worse than the
risk?

First I can't knit, next I can't cut my chicken, now I can't brush my
teeth after an 8 hour flight?

So what happens to the laptops? Put them in our check in luggage? I
think not.

Keep your laptop with you. They banned only liquids and gels.

Unless you are flying to/from the UK you should have no problems
carrying on your laptop. If you are going or coming the UK I guess you
can send your laptop my FedEX or DHL.

In the days when we could lock our suitcases, I shipping my laptop in
my suitcase, and put my dirty laundry in the computer bag.

yo can still lock your suitcases. There is a special TSA lock that you
can use so they can open it with their master key. Probably at least as
secure as the regular locks (YOU can decide if that is a good thing or
damning with faint praise-grin)

Kurt, I have considered buying the TSA locks, but have wondered how long
before the wrong hands get on the TSA keys.
Until I am convinced that is the way to go, I will use plastic ties...At
least I know if a suitcase has been opened if one is cut off.

When they open a TSA lock you know. It has an indicator. The one time
they opened my lock though they managed to bend the pins and make it
unusable as the pin would not go back in.

Probably. Even is the pre-9/11 days locks were largely to stop the
crimes of convenience or spur of the moment. Make 'em work for it, I
always say. I am pretty sure that the wrong hands are on the TSA keys.
Someone may know for sure, but isn't there a color coding or something
that changes color if the TSA keys are use? Don't remember

The ones I have do have an indicator but I guess some of them don't.
