Default Venture opens up new part of Kakadu [Australia]

Travelpress: Venture opens up new part of Kakadu

March 9, The first visitor accommodation in the remote northern
wetlands of Kakadu is to be established under an agreement with
traditional owners.

The new safari camp and touring program at Hawk Dreaming is part of a
joint tourism venture between Bunitj people and AAT Kings/Aussie
Adventure Holidays.

The venture will provide new experiences for park visitors as well as
business and employment opportunities for the Bunitj Clan, according
to the Director of National Parks, Peter Cochrane.

"This is an outstanding example of a new partnership approach that
promotes tourism and local industry, while providing tangible benefits
to the custodians of Kakadu," Mr Cochrane said.

Mr Cochrane said Park staff and the Kakadu Board of Management had
been working to facilitate joint ventures that would develop new
tourism opportunities, improve visitor satisfaction and support
Indigenous and regional economic development.

Increasing the involvement of traditional owners in tourism was one of
the organisation's key management objectives, he said.

Have to say that provisionally I'm all in favour. I suspect that selective
tourism development may well prove to be the saviour of many remote
communities. Whilst nobody wants tourists tramping through their backyard,
well organized and controlled developments can be a win win situation.
Should be more of it.
