Need suggestions near London.
Hi all, We're going to London soon and need suggestions for a few days nearby -- say leaving London Wednesday morning and back Saturday morning for the flight out. We prefer to travel by train and don't want to take the chunnel. But we could consider cheap air travel. A quick glance at a travel book has me thinking about the Cotswolds. Any suggestions? -troy |

Combined with a day in Bath, good choice, it's a bit difficult to get to the pretty towns/villages by train though. You'll need to investigate the bus. You might want to visit: Bourton-on-the-water, Bilbury, Broadway, Stow-on-the-wold. http://www.traveline.org.uk/index.htm HTH tim Any suggestions? -troy |

From there you can easily get a tour to Stonehenge and Avebury and its easy to get back to Heathrow. http://visitbath.co.uk/site/home Keith |

Make an early start on the Wednesday and you could be in virtually any major European city by lunchtime. Check out this good, but not exhaustive, site for details of which cheap airlines fly whe http://www.departures-arrivals.com/e...lies-where.htm |

Cotswolds would be a good choice if you want classically pretty English countryside: alternative country areas which are the same sort of distance, and also very attractive, though not as well known among non-Londoners, would include the New Forest and Suffolk. Of these the New Forest - around Brockenhurst - probably scores highest for being able to get straight off a train into very attractive countryside. I find it slightly 'wilder' than the Cotswolds in feel, with its clearings and its forest ponies, and it's a great area for country walking. Suffolk has some fine coastal scenery and the attractive towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold (the latter has become rather trendy with reports of beach huts changing hands for outrageous prices). As others have mentioned Bath and York are easy rail trips from London. Edinburgh and/or Glasgow would also be perfectly feasible by train given that you have three whole days for your side-trip. You could, at a pinch, go further north in Scotland. The line north and west from Glasgow towards Fort William and Oban is very scenic. Martin |

The former (Aldeburgh) has been quite trendy for a while! Though there is no train station, it's do-able by public transport. (OP mentioned train as a possibility.) Two hour train ride from London Liverpool Street to Saxmundham, then either a cab from there to Aldeburgh (around 14-15 pounds) or there are local bus services. Lots of lovely areas for walking- obviously quite flat terrain, Aldeburgh to Thorpeness, around Snape etc. -- David Horne- www.davidhorne.net usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |
