Advice re hotels in BKK please...

Hey all -

Will be spending 4 days in BKK soon - just a standover; aim to get some rest
before a new job. I am faced with a choice between the Radisson (out of
town but good write-ups) and the Amari Boulevard Hotel in Sukhumvit (more
Central but current construction, they tell me).

Are there any sages in the group who could help me make up my mind.....

Not sure what you're looking for but from what I can tell there's not much
reason to spend more than US$25/night unless you are in the market for
serious luxury.

Recently stayed at the Amari at the airport and frankly, it was one of the
worst hotels I've been in recently, especially for the price. My room stank
and was swarming with mosquitos, the sink didn't drain, people kept banging
on my door all night, and the room was packed to the gills with crass sales
pitches.

On subsequent transits (I've been through BKK 6 times in the past three
weeks) I used the Comfort Suites, which is 1/4 the price ($30 vs $120). It's
a $2 taxi ride from the airport but the ride takes as long as the walk to
the Amari so that evens out pretty quickly.

If those are the only 2 hotels you can choose from, then go for the
centrally located one. Don't underestimate the traffic in BKK. Better
still, if you can, try and change the choices.

I've stayed at the Radisson, and although it is quite a nice hotel,
the location isn't really convenient for anything.

The Amari Boulevard, on the other hand, is in Sukhumvit soi 5, which
is right next to a skytrain station and more central. Its an older
hotel, so if there's any construction going on it would probably be
some kind of renovations.

The CHateau de Bangkok sounds very PRETENTIOUS but it isn't really. The
rooms are mini suites with somewhere to microwave and a sink. The rooms are
a good size. Service is ACCOR and v good. There is a small swimming pool on
the roof. You can get around the city easily. A quiet location. And not very
expensive for a centrally located hotel.

cheap tourist hotel in Bangkok is $50. Luxury hotels are over $100 a
night in Bangkok.

Never stayed there but that is the reputation it has.

Bull****. Last month, we stayed in a clean, nice twin-bed room, downtown
Bangkok, certainly 3 star hotel, large bathroom with bathtub, TV, minibar,
safe in the room, jacuzzi on the roof of the hotel, for 980 baht (EUR 20,
USD 24) for the room per night, nice buffet breakfast included.

At the moment I'm staying in the Grace Hotel on Sukhimvit Soi 3 for 930 baht
per night (about US$23). It's very clean and well-maintained, well located
(5 minutes' walk to skytrain), probably what I'd call a 3-star. I cannot
imagine what I could get for more money that would be worth the additional
expense.
