I suggest NO FANNY POUCH they are tooo easy to clip in Europe. Italy
and barcelona are BIG on pick pockets. I bought a wristlet Such as
the following BUT mine was like $10
http://www.amazon.com/Coach-Wristlet...ref=pd_sbs_a_2
I had my credit card, Som,e Cash,ID and Camera in there goes around
my wrist and held in my palm. Was perfect. Our Bus driver said to the
woman LEAVE handbags on bus... The tour guide even pointed out to us
the Beaitoful woman and said THEY are PICK POCKETS and that man wa
JUST pickpocketed.. the bus behind us man was pick pocketed. SO into
my Bra and wristlet everything went. NO problems. Las ramblas is very
nice BUT pick pocket heaven AS WELL as the AIRPORT..... BE CAREFUL.
ALso in Messina the Gypsies are all over with their YOUNG kids who
also are Pick pockets and begging and they lay in front of the
churches!

Its one thing to venture into the streets of the Bahamas or
Cozumel with just a DL. But I would not walk the streets
Europe without proof of US citizenship.

Even if you are allowed to embark without showing your
passport, should you encounter local law enforcement
away from the port or need emergency assistance from
the US embassy, having at least a copy would be helpful.

I suggest a pouch that hangs down around your neck.

I wonder if a passport card would work. It's small and easy to carry.
It wouldn't serve to get you back into the country, but it doesn't
need to.

Copy of passport should be fine.

Photocopies can be cut+folded to card-size, for less cost.
Say there's an accident or sudden illness, and the ship sails
w/o you. It would be much easier for a consulate to order
a replacement with details of your passport at hand..

I had a copy of my passport with me. My original was on the bus locked
away. I was on a RCCL tour that was very good,

And if you feel that way about Europe, consider what "the rest of the
world" is like.

In 1979/1980, I worked for a defense contractor. One of the "project
development specialists" was what can only be described as "an
international man of mystery". Although it didn't happen to him, he
was in a Southeast Asian country when someone ran full tilt at the US
embassy, waving his passport and screaming "US CITIZEN, US CITIZEN".
The Marines stopped him, but also stopped the mob that was pursuing
him. I don't know what what eventually happened to the guy, though.

"Yes"
"No"
"Please"
"Thank you"
"Where are the restrooms?"
"I wish to speak with a representative of the American embassy"

All phrases you should learn.

Oh yeah,

I heard that too. I didn't have any problem there, but my grandson said
he saw
a gang of kids who snatched someone's daypack and ran off. Of course it
could
have been just kids fooling around. We sat for a short time in a square
and
observed people, and he said he saw people who appeared not to know each
other
but who actually did communicate. It is possible there are some snatch
and grab
type people in addition to the sneaky pick-pocket type people

I have been with people who had a problem in other areas of Spain but it
was 45
years ago. My mom had a coin purse stolen out of a small waist bag in a
bookstore, and a girl on a day trip to Segovia with us had her gold card
stolen
twice in three days. She carried it in a little tiny shoulder bag, not
much
larger than passport size.

For myself, I take all my jewelry off and leave it at home with the
exception of
a plain gold wedding band of no emotional significance. I do wear a waist
bag -
in front. For a tour or walking around in a city, I have in it a small
change
purse with one credit card, a photo ID (not my passport), a small amount
of
money and my camera batteries.

I carry my passport and an alternate credit card under my clothing against
my
body except when I'm actually in places where I need to take it out, and
then I
have it in one of those passport carriers that go around my neck.
Otherwise, I
can't get to it without undressing. [I had my extra money there plus some
pills
in a carrier that rattled when I was going through Heathrow in a
wheelchair, and
when they patted me down they wanted to look at this, and I said I
couldn't get
to it without undressing - I was wearing a one piece dress with sleeves.
They
took me into a separate room so I could pull my dress up and they could
inspect
it. My grandson thought this was hilarious - he kept saying "Grandma had
a
cavity search, Grandma had a cavity search.]

My husband has a belt safe which hooks over his belt and is inside his
trousers
- very hard to get things out of, so I think it would be equally hard for
a
thief.. He wraps his wallet with rubber bands.

Also, haven't bought Euros yet. Have been told - to get them
in small denominations. Like 1, 5 and 10? Good idea?

Thanks.

I try to use a credit card for everything I can. (Be sure your card
doesn't
charge extra for other currencies, and tell them you are going to be
traveling.)
The ship will probably charge you a percentage like 3% - more than what
an ATM
would charge for giving you Euros. I changed some money at the airport.
I have
gotten money at an ATM (be sure you have a pin that uses numbers as the
ATMs in
Europe may not have the letters on them), and then bought a gellato so
that I'd
have change.

It's a good idea to have some small US$ denominations. I would say $10
worth of
ones and a couple of $5s
