Default CCL brands to raise fuel supplement

Just saw this posted.

Carnival corporation & PLC

April 7 2008

Dear travel Partner,
Because of the continued rapid escalation of fuel prices, six of
Carnival Corp. & plc's brands-Carnival cruise lines, Costa cruises,
Cunard line, Holland America line, Princess cruises and the Yachts of
Seabourn- will increase their current fuel supplement from $5 to $7
(USD) per person per day.
These brands will also implement a fuel supplement on third, fourth and
fifth passengers of $2 per person per day.

The new fuel supplements will apply to all new bookings effective April
21, 2008.
The fuel supplement will not exceed $98 per person per voyage for the
first and second guests and $28 per person per voyage for the third,
fourth and fifth guests in a stateroom.

For bookings made from November 7 2007 to April 20, 2008 the original
fuel supplement of $5 per person per day will apply.

We regret having to take this action, but fuel price increases have
continued and we now find it necessary to implement a modest increase in
the supplement.

Please remember that all of your booking made on or before April 20 2008
will not be subject to the supplement increase. Most importantly, we
want to thank you for your business and support for all our brands.

Sincerely,
Bill Harber

Director of Marketing

Hi Bill,

At least they learned not to make these changes retroactive.

Best regards,

I some ways, though, that makes it worse. I don't see why they just
can't add the supplement to their prices if they aren't going to charge
those already booked. The "reasoning" behind the fuel supplement is to
capture the price increases that they can't capture elsewhere. Why not
just include it in the price going forward and stop all this hoo ha.

Hi Kurt,

They can't include it in the price as they are contractually committed
to pay commissions to travel agent. You know they don't want to do
that. :+)

If they add the increase into the fare, they would have to pay commission on
it.

We are to the point on many inexpensive cruises where the fuel surcharge,
non-commissionable fare (used to be port charges) and taxes are now almost
as much as the cruise fare in some cases.

Example... a recent sale for an inside GTY was $320. NCF $159, Fuel
Surcharge $35 and taxes $53.31. Total fare to the customer was $567.31

Travel agent gets commission based on $320... or 56% of the total sale.

And they have also invested how much in all the printed material
already out there with fares? In US$ for North America in most cases
[which annoys us here in Canada, obviously] and in Euros in Europe,
and so on.... How do they handle the tons of printed material if that
charge is blended in somehow? Throw away lots of money? And there are
the other forms of material such as the CDs with the fares already
there, as well as the web material. If, every time the fuel supplement
goes up, and all that material becomes junk, I can see the
environmentalists screaming now...
