After the exchange rate, what problems are you expecting?

Euro 5 for a half litre beer in France and Italy. That's horrific in my
book.

For about the same money you can have half a litre of (house)wine in an
italian restaurant. Maybe not in Rome, but certainly in Genua or Pisa. In
France you'll also find wine chepaer than beer.

In our recent trip to Marseille etc, I found it quite easy to get house
wine for 6 euro a half litre, sometimes less. 4 euro at Toinou
Coquillages in Marseille for example.

I tend to favour wine with food, though it depends what I'm eating.
Tsing Tao was 3 euro a bottle at a chinese restaurant we dined at in
Paris last week- just round the corner from the Hotel de Ville. Went
well with the tripe!

mmmm ... in Madrid tripe goes well with a jaunty verdejo!

I can imagine. I forget if I've had tripe in Madrid- not sure. I did
have it in March in Porto (it's a local speciality- tripas a modo do
Porto) and it was excellent with a vinho verde.

In June I paid EUR8 for a 330ml bottle of Mahou on the terrace of a very
swish Madrid hotel.

That's what I paid for a bottle of Red Wine the same size on board of
Ryanair ;-)

Oh, I'm not approving of the price. It was a rare visit upmarket. The wine
in Madrid was generally cheap and good. The wine in Istanbul was even
cheaper but much more variable.

It might be possible, but there's not a huge difference ime and the wine
for that price is pretty awful.

Bad taste in wine saves me a lot of money!

Never call South Tyroleans Italians, unless you really want to **** them
off ;-)

Rheinhold Messner?

He considers himself a South Tyrolean first, Austrian second, and if
pressed admits to having an Italian passport.

My wife and I wanted to visit possibly Spain or Italy from here in
Arizona US, but have been hearing horror stories about the current
exchange rate. A while back we visited California, and I really got
tired of being ripped of on everything. I can't imagine how Europe
would be right now.

I was wondering if anybody might have some advice on visiting europe on the
cheap? Stuff like renting a room with kitchen access and getting local
groceries instead of paying for restaurant meals, etc.

At least in spanish holidy-areas you can rent Appartments that come whith a
small kitchen. Often these Appartments are part of hotels, but you don't
have to book the food - you can just book the appartment by itself.

At least in Spain these places are rather cheap.

Also the case in other countries- like Croatia. We booked an apartment
for a short trip to Dubrovnik last October. 55 euro a night, and had a
large kitchen- though apart from breakfast we ate out all the time!
Amazing view from our balcony too...
