Default Hungary versus the Gulf: Europe beats America, again

Does Europe do better spills than the US?

Of course it does. Here are the facts:

Volume

Gulf oil: 700,000 cubic metres
Hungarian sludge: 1 million cubic metres

Winner: Europe

Toxicity and environmental harm

Gulf oil: Unclear. A lot of oil is sitting on the seabed. Seabirds and
mammals have suffered, but in small numbers compared to Exxon Valdez.
Dispersants and oil may enter the food chain.

Hungarian sludge: Has a pH of between 10 and 13 (alkaline) making it as
caustic as lye, so it's presumably killed a great deal of plant and animal
life. Has already killed almost 100% of fish in the Marcal river.

Winner: Europe

Deaths

Gulf oil: 11 deaths
Hungarian sludge: 4 deaths

Winner: America

Injuries

Gulf oil: 17 injured
Hungarian sludge: 120 injured

Winner: Europe

Distance travelled

Gulf oil: Although the spill hasn't travelled very far on the surface, it's
under the surface and on the seabed too. It's also knocking about as a
solution, so it's presumably at the mercy of the currents.
Hungarian sludge: Looks to have got into the Danube, so it's plain sailing
all the way to the Black Sea hundreds of miles away. This will be mitigated
by the addition of binders such as plaster, and by pouring acid into the
rivers, which is a great relief to the fish.

Winner: Europe

Verdict

Europe beats savage, uncivilised America. Hungarian sludge wins. It didn't
kill as many people, but it injured many more, it's far more toxic, the
cleanup will harm the environment more effectively, and it may travel a lot
further.

It's worth noting that the WWF says Hungary has two other mud lakes close to
water sources. They contain a total of 50 million cubic metres, utterly
dwarfing the red mud reservoir that broke this week. So America, don't even
try and come back on this one - it was just a warning shot.

Suddenly it's not "British Petroleum" any more?

I was under the impression that BP rebranded itself as 'Beyond Petroleum',
when it merged with the "American Oil Company" AMOCO back in 1998.

Looks to be not mostly owned and run by Brits.

See https://amadeus.bvdep.com/amadeus/top20/report_2.htm

Even if you tot up holdings of PLCs, they will also be owned globally/in the
US.

The important thing is to realise that the Brits are equally to blame for
both disasters. After all, they come from a country called "Yerp".

The Brits created and imposed order on Yerp.

Like in the creation story, only they didn't get to name the animals.

Which should have been known to Obama.
