I love the kind of scenery I've read about in S Island but I guess
that much of it might be tricky to get to in winter. I fly into
Christchurch 23rd June, Test match there on the 25th and then a few
free days until the next Test match in Wellington on July 2nd.

What is the likely situation and would I be better advised to give up
my yen to see the S Island sights and head for warmer N Island
immediately after the Christchurch test?

All help gratefully received.

Why?

Because of the possibility of heavy snow making driving conditions
difficult. How geared are things to the skiing industry, for example?
I trust that snow doesn't make as such an ass of kiwis as it does of
us folks in the UK.

We don't get heavy snow in NZ.

Occasionally the Alpine passes are closed for a few hours or overnight.
Allow an extra day to get back to Chch if you are worried about getting to a
flight. Allow more time for the driving distances as the roads, while
without exception have a very high standard of surface (no where near the
pot-holes of Aussie for example), are often very winding and up and down. I
would recommend a loop of Arthurs Pass-West Coast to Westport-Lewis Pass-
Hanmer Springs- Kaikoura- Christchurch if you have three or four days, but
truely, just heading out in almost any direction will do it for you.
