Default Room Service Question

some cruise lines now add a service change for room service.

But the OP clearly stated that she is on a Princess cruise.

Try to keep up.

Default Room Service Question

As long as we're on room service . . .

On our upcoming Regents cruise all gratuities are included in the fare.
Their website says that if you are really impressed with the service you
can make a donation to the crew fund and they give some examples of how
the fund is used. If the service is as good as I'm told it is we will
most certainly do that.

If we decide to have a room service breakast on the balcony would it be
gauche to tip the server a couple of dollars?? I hadn't even though
about it until this thread popped up but if someone has a good answer
I'd like to hear it.

A note on our cruise. Friday I received an email confirmation of our
airline schedule subject, of course, to time changes. Our domestic
flights are AUS-DFW-LAS the on return LAX-AUS. Regents has upgraded us
to 1st class on all of those segments. I'm liking those folks more
every day :-)

Hi Charles,

RSSC is a top notch company. This includes, not only the cruise
product, but their dealings with travel agents.

LOL! I'm sorry, Marcia....although Marsha from Ohio and Marsha
from Nevada are very nice people, I am sorry for the misspelling
of your name!!!

Well, Mrs. Nonny and I can attest that Marsha L is a very nice
person. That's saying nothing about the others, who we've just
not met, yet.

Our nation should be more like Illinois

One in office and the second in prison.

Hi, I'm new to this group, but some of the names are familiar from
other newsgroups.

We're booked on the Sapphire Princess sailing to Alaska next
June. I was on one cruise years ago, but I had nothing to do with
the booking or finances so I'm pretty clueless.

Just to clarify, don't confuse me (Marsha from Ohio, who has been on one
cruise (Great Lakes circle cruise) or Marsha from Nevada, with Marcia
R., the original poster. :-)

Marsha from Ohio

OMG, there are 3 of us here. LOL.

Marcia from Las Vegas :-)

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia

Sorry - couldn't resist.

I don't remember having to sign anything, or having an opportunity to
tip, when I ordered room service coffee on the Norwegian Sun.

Of course, that happened before I'd had my coffee, so it's possible
they waved something in front of me and realized I wasn't going to be
able to understand it, so they just left.

My question is about room service on the ship.

Marcia

George, am I ever glad that you came to Marsha's rescue with the TRUTH
about
room service! I was amazed at the answers that she got...Kurt was right
too,
but did not go into as much detail as you did! All Marsha wanted was
information for breakfast to be sent to her cabin, for Pete's sake!!!

Well, I thought part of the question was about tipping. Her original
post says "but I still don't quite get the tipping process. Do you
never hand out cash and settle it
all at the end, or do you tip for room service?" That's why I
explained how it is on HAL thinking it is probably the same system on
other lines.

gfc

And you were entirely right. Jean's comments are inappropriate to the
extent they don't distinguish between sisker and the rest of us.

Hi Peter,

Nowhere in your post did you tell Marsha that you tip the room service
person when they deliver to your cabin...But you did say:

"Gratuities may be charged (and are in fact by default charged) to your
onboard account
and include tips for cabin steward, dining room staff and room service
people"

That was misleading ..

It is not "misleading". It is entirely relevant and correct. Marcia (that is
her name; read her post) wanted to know whether she needs cash to tip the
waiter bringing her breakfast. The answer is no.

to me as it sounded as if you were saying that she
could charge her room service tip to her shipboard account which she cannot.
Perhaps the room service servers do get some out of the "pot" but their tip
is always paid in cash when they deliver food to your cabin.

Breakfast room service servers - generally waiters or assistant waiters - do
indeed share. Read the documentation in your cabin. Of course you may give
additional tips, but it doesn't change the answer to Marcia's question. A
statement is not "misleading" just because you don't read it correctly and
it "sounds" as if something else is said. What is misleading is your
statement that "their tip is always paid in cash". The whole point of the
cashless system is: guests don't need cash; gratuities may be charged to the
OBA; the tips are shared broadly.

For someone, like Marsha, who had been on one cruise years ago, it would not
have been clear and sounded as if her room service tip was taken care of on
her shipboard account.

It is, because the servants/waiters shares out of the pot. BTW: your
statement that waiters check the computer is erroneous too. Only guest
relations have access to the onboard accounts.

Many things have changed in all the years of cruising

For example: no more tipping in cash. Cashless system. Equitable
distribution of gratuities. Not just to the people you see.
and if I were in her place, I would want to know what to expect. At least
have an idea of what to expect as we all have different views but some are
clearly written out for us in our documents.

Exactly. I would suggest you take a look at them before you call sometthing
"misleading".
Didn't mean to step on your toes! ;-)

It is custom to leave 3, 2, or 1 dollars cash for room service even on
ships where they auto charge for gratuities. It is not required, just
customary. If it is just coffee I would have a $1 bill handy. For
something more like coffee and danish I would have a couple of dollar
bills handy. If it is complete hot breakfasts $3 would be about right.

The last time I was on NCL, I ordered room service and don't remember
getting anything delivered at all.
