the right place to live in Sydney
"Winston Smith" wrote in message ... Hi, First of all, thank you all for your answers. I'm not attending any university. But I'm a student in Canada and I'm coming for a summer job. So I'm just looking for a place near where students usually hang out in Sydney. Especially, I don't want to depend on public transportation to come back home at night, I'd rather walk ;-) It seems everybody agrees on Glebe and Newtown. But what are the differences between the two ? About price range, I think I'll be able to afford a nice place as I'll have a job. Furthermore, I am ready to take a roommate to cut some costs. And as I'm staying only 4 months, my priority is to have the best possible stay in Sydney, even if I have to spend all my savings for that. Thanks again, Winston Don't assume that you will be walking home at night from the city. The city is pretty much dead at night, so walking home from it is not an issue. Newtown and Glebe are interesting areas, but they are mostly share accomodation, a lot of the houses are pretty disgusting and dirty - inner city Sydney has huge cockroaches, its crowded and noisy. Over summer it is very hot, and they are not convenient to the beach, there aren't a lot of parks or swimming pools or public amenity generally. Their big advantage is they are cheap. For a bit more money you can share a flat or a house in a beach side suburb, still only a few kms from the city. Bondi is the best known and is a huge scene, Tamarama, Bronte are also good. 4 months in Sydney over summer with access to a beach is a very, very different experience to 4 months in Sydney in a (trendy) inner-city slum area. If you will have a job, forget Newtown and Glebe. Live some nice, and have a fantastic experience. The coast and harbour of Sydney are stunning, particularly in summer, and affordable places to live. The eastern suburbs (Bondi etc) has a vibrant travellers scene, heaps of restuarants, shops, and things to do, good access to beaches, close to the city - a way better Sydney experience than Newtown or Glebe. |
