Why new ships?
For those that must have or strongly prefer new ships, with new being
defined as ships in service for 2 years or less, why? I've have issues with you, but please state your case Ben S. |

I don't fit your criteria, as I don't prefer a new ship, but I will say that the one time I cruised on one (the NOrwegian Dawn in January 2003; her 5th sailing) there was a lot of excitement. It was fun to see the sparkling newness of everything, fun to watch pre-cruise for the christening ceremony and all the excitement. It was fun to be the first on rtc to post a review of the ship. But I have had just as good cruses on Older ships. Indeed, our cruise on Sovereign of the Seas was enhanced because of her age. In her own way she was a fairly historic vessel. And cruises on older, smaller ships can mean more interesting ports. -- Julie ********** Check out my Travel Pages (non-commercial) at http://www.dragonsholm.org/travel.htm |

Baby boomers are now coming to an age of retirement. They are a group,
for the most part.that have held good paying jobs and perhaps have opted for early retirement. Their ideas of cruise ships. entertainment, accommodations could possibly be different than what cruise lines now have to offer. Cruise lines may find it less expensive in the long run to build new ships than try to stretch and add on to their existing ships. SUNNY......Just my observations S'nd I XXX |

I prefer Carnival's Spirit class ships and Royal Caribbean's Voyager class ships when compared to their older ships. They just happen to be newer. I will cruise on the Conquest in about a month, but I may not like that ship as well as the Spirit class ships. Becca -----would like to try all of them... I too, like the brand new ships, just because of the newness and being sparkling clean ...If an older ship has been well taken care of, I enjoy her as well. I just like being on a ship period! The anticipation and exploration of what each one offers is exciting in itself...One of my most favorite ships was the *Real* Pacific Princess.. I don't remember, Ben, if you ever sailed on her, but I think that she would have been to your liking...She would still attract passengers if she were around...Has anyone heard of how she is faring now? --Jean |

I will cruise on the Conquest in about a month, but I may not like that ship as well as the Spirit class ships. And you also like the Dream and Sea, early 90s vintage ships. I don't think you are a new ship junkie I don't like Carnival ships though their layouts are good, the decor doesn't agree with me. RCI's best ships may be the Radiance and Voyager class, I think because RCI is an evolutionary line and they tend to be very consistent and improve over the previous generations. There are some newer generation ships, particularly the Celebrity Millennium ships, I don't like. I haven't been on HAL's Zuiderdam class, I've not been onboard one for a luncheon. One of the problems I have with most of the newer ships is the emphasis on private deck space vs. public. There are also none under 80,000 tons, they share hulls, they match features, and they come out so soon after each other, I don't feel that the designers spent enough time sweating their details. Sometimes some work better than the others as they are a refinement of something that a previous ship in the generation applied. Overall, they don't seem as distinct as they once were from line to line and I don't feel any of them, except perhaps the QM2, were meant to be great one-offs. Ben S.
