The Great Global Warming Swindle
Climatologist Tim Ball's star on the rise

"Dr. Tim Ball, whose Canada Free Press column. "Global Warming: The
Cold, Hard Facts?" was posted by the Drudge Report ion Feb. 5, is one
of the eminent scientists quoted in the documentary, "The Great Global
Warming Swindle" to be aired in Britain on Channel 4.com/science this
Thursday."

A later show brough in the US brought on Dr. Timothy Ball, one of the
climatologists in the new documentary "The Great Global Warming
Swindle." While Ball discussed the new movie and how Al Gore has "got
a lot of the facts wrong," a list of global warming scientists rolled
across the screen.

There was only one catch. The more than 70 names "indeed do
question" and "are skeptics of this new mad hysteria here" about
global warming, according to host Sean Hannity. The list had many
prominent names, including three people connected to the U.N.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climatologists,
scientists and noted hurricane expert Bill Gray.

Many of the names might be familiar to readers who follow the
issue, such as Dr. Richard Lindzen, a meteorologist from MIT, and Dr.
Patrick Michaels, professor of environmental science from the
University of Virginia.

The list also included two reviewers and an atmospheric science
consultant affiliated with the U.N.'s IPCC. Those three we Dr.
Richard S. Courtney, a climate and atmospheric science consultant;
Peter Dietze, an official reviewer and Dr. Vincent Gray, an expert
reviewer.

Ball summed up the real nature of the current climate debate.
"There's no question it's political and it's driven by the United
Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a political
organization." Ball went on to point out that the 2,000 people who
worked on the recent IPCC report included "bureaucrats" and "political
people," "not 2,000 scientists."

degree was in historical geography - not climatology - and it was

He claims as well to have been a professor (again of climatology) at

Dr. Ball claims never to have been paid by oil and gas interests, but
if you look here , you'll find a Globe and Mail story in which Dr.
Barry Cooper, the man behind Ball's former industry front group, the

"Whatever one may feel about Tim Ball's denial of climate change
science, newspapers ought to report factual summaries of authors'
credentials. You note that he "was the first Climatology PhD in Canada
and worked as a Professor of Climatology at the University of Winnipeg
for 28 years". Ball received a PhD in Geography in the UK in 1982, on
a topic in historical climatology. Canada already had PhDs in
climatology, and it is important to recognize them and their research.
Examples include Kenneth Hare, a well-respected Professor at McGill,
who received his PhD in 1950, also in the UK. Climatologist Andre
Robert (PhD from McGill, 1965) conducted research that laid the
groundwork in atmospheric models and climate. Timothy Oke, a leader in
the study of urban climate, received his PhD from McMaster in 1967.
According to Ball's website, he was not a climatology professor at the
University of Winnipeg for 28 years. And how could he have? He did not
even have an entry-level PhD until 1983, that would allow even
Assistant Professor status. During much of the 28 years cited, he was
a junior Lecturer who rarely published, and then spent 8 years as a
geography professor. His work does not show any evidence of research
regarding climate and atmosphere and the few papers he has published
concern other matters. There are great gains to be made in science
from conjectures and refutations, but sometimes denial is nothing more
than denial."

The Great Global Warming Swindle
Climatologist Tim Ball's star on the rise
......... (cut) ..................

# "Never go by authority, because there are always contrary authorities to
be found" ; thus, Bertrand Russell (or words to that effect). Yes, there
are plenty of persons grandstanding on the Global Warming issue - but who
are we to believe?
Any climatic change could be entirely natural, and humans have no
influence one way or another.
Yet the polar ice is melting, glaciers retreating, and the permafrost
isn't nearly as permanent as it used to be.
Bizarre weather patterns are emerging - and meanwhile The Human Plague
sweeps across the planet, chomping everything in its path, egged on by
capitalist obsession with "growth". Human factories belch vast quantities
of smoke into the atmosphere - but, not to worry, it won't cause any harm.
What is the most characteristic trait of humans - activity! They just
won't leave anything alone. The only time they don't act is - when it
involves fixing a problem of their own making; then it's a case of "it's
only natural", or "the Lord will provide".
====================
Epitaph to Complacency
====================
I'm a Green Froggy, and I am well tanked;
Don't worry 'bout me, if I swam or I sanked.
The water was cool, then pleasantly warm.
'Bout me, the bubbles, started to swarm.
Do I detect something? a fire being stoked?
(There is nothing more, as our Froggy just croaked.)

And all the others?

I hope such an important topic is not going to boil down to what is
written in somebody's blog!

It's generally accepted that when one resorts to personal attack to
counter an academic argument then it's fairly certain that the
attacker experiences difficulty in attacking the academics.

Whatever Ball is or is not he certainly isn't a fraud.

However, some of these difficulties might be laid to rest if one
considers the nature of climatology.

It is a disciplinary study involving elements of Chemistry, Physics,
Biology, Geography and God knows what else. I was surprised to find a
few minutes ago that any university offered a first degree in
Climatology. Apparently the University of New South Wales claims the
distinction of offering the world's first degree course in this area
from 2001.

This would mean that all entrants into this field would and will come
from diverse academic backgrounds. Specialisms within University
departments are not exactly unknown. Too much credance ought not to be
paid to the general label Geography.

Taking the PhD from the University of London the title of his thesis
was:

"Climatic Change in Central Canada: A preliminary analysis of weather
information from the Hudson's Bay Company Forts at York Factory and
Churchill Factory, 1714-1850."

Where it will remain archived for all to see.

Ball claims a PhD in climatology. That might represent a
simplification but there is little doubt that he was awarded a PhD by
the UoL as the result of a climatological study.

Now the question as to the "Doctor" nonesense.

It is claimed by his critics that he has "upgraded" his PhD to a more
"prestigious" Doctor of Science. Now it may well be that the term
Doctor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy may be interchangeable in
the US in cases where the study in question falls within the broad
field of Science. This is not the case in the UK where the degree of
Doctor of Science is only awarded these days as an honourary degree.
As such it has no academic significance whatsoever.

It's tragic that nothing can be levelled against a swimmer against the
tide other than the cry "He's a charletan" "He's in the pay of the oil
companies etc."

With regard to the latter I think he answers the slur admirably "In
another instance, I was accused by Canadian environmentalist David
Suzuki of being paid by oil companies. That is a lie. Apparently he
thinks if the fossil fuel companies pay you have an agenda. So if
Greenpeace, Sierra Club or governments pay there is no agenda and only
truth and enlightenment? "

It is true that if you Google you will find lots of references to
Ball. You will find very few, if any, challenges to the science
underlying his arguments. If he is a fraud then this science must be
very flimsy indeed and thus very simple to challenge.

Hence if he is to be attacked, attack him there because it is there
where it matters.

The Great Global Warming Swindle
Climatologist Tim Ball's star on the rise

"Dr. Tim Ball, whose Canada Free Press column. "Global Warming: The
Cold, Hard Facts?" was posted by the Drudge Report ion Feb. 5, is one
of the eminent scientists quoted in the documentary, "The Great Global
Warming Swindle" to be aired in Britain on Channel 4.com/science this
Thursday."

A later show brough in the US brought on Dr. Timothy Ball, one of the
climatologists in the new documentary "The Great Global Warming
Swindle." While Ball discussed the new movie and how Al Gore has "got
a lot of the facts wrong," a list of global warming scientists rolled
across the screen.

the rate you're going you'll soon collect a full house

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Tim_Ball
Dr. Timothy Ball is Chairman and Chair of the Scientific Advisory
Committee of the Natural Resources Stewardship Project (NRSP). [1] Two
of the three directors of the NRSP - Timothy Egan and Julio Lagos -
are executives with the PR and lobbying company, the High Park Group
(HPG). [2] Both HPG and Egan and Lagos work for energy industry
clients and companies on energy policy. [3]

Ball is a Canadian climate change skeptic and was previously a
"scientific advisor" to the oil industry-backed organization, Friends
of Science. [4] Ball is a member of the Board of Research Advisors of
the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a Canadian free-market think
tank which is predominantly funded by foundations and corporations.
[5]

http://www.desmogblog.com/dr-tim-bal...-just-wont-die
"But Ball can't even tell the truth about his own resume. His claim to
be the first Climatology Ph.D. in Canada is a total falsehood; his
degree was in historical geography - not climatology - and it was
nowhere near the first ever granted to someone writing vaguely in the
field. It also was granted by the university as a doctor of
philosophy, not the more prestigious "doctor of science" that Ball
claims in these articles.

He claims as well to have been a professor (again of climatology) at
the University of Winnipeg for 32 years, while he confirmed in his own
Statement of Claim in a pending lawsuit (look here ) that he was a
professor (of geography, never climatology) for just eight years.

Dr. Ball claims never to have been paid by oil and gas interests, but
if you look here , you'll find a Globe and Mail story in which Dr.
Barry Cooper, the man behind Ball's former industry front group, the
Friends of Science , offers this clumsy admission: "[The money's] not
exclusively from the oil and gas industry," says Prof. Cooper. "It's
also from foundations and individuals. I can't tell you the names of
those companies, or the foundations for that matter, or the
individuals." "

and much more...
various sources are daring him to sue them...http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/2006...all_sue_me.php
There are great gains to be made in science
from conjectures and refutations, but sometimes denial is nothing more
than denial."

you can find further links by the dozen...or the thousand!

And all the others?

I hope such an important topic is not going to boil down to what is
written in somebody's blog!

It's generally accepted that when one resorts to personal attack to
counter an academic argument then it's fairly certain that the
attacker experiences difficulty in attacking the academics.

Whatever Ball is or is not he certainly isn't a fraud.

i've heard him....i've seen him...i know some of whom he
is working for....
you make your judgement i'll make mine.....

i'd rather trust bloggers who work than fossil media who mostly
copy and rarely work.....
look at my latest fred if you wish to defend the fossil media....

Apparently the University of New South Wales claims the
distinction of offering the world's first degree course in this area
from 2001.

note his regular claims

This would mean that all entrants into this field would and will come
from diverse academic backgrounds. Specialisms within University
departments are not exactly unknown. Too much credance ought not to be
paid to the general label Geography.

agreed....but hardly the point

Taking the PhD from the University of London the title of his thesis
was:

phd in geography?

"Climatic Change in Central Canada: A preliminary analysis of weather
information from the Hudson's Bay Company Forts at York Factory and
Churchill Factory, 1714-1850."

Where it will remain archived for all to see.

Ball claims a PhD in climatology. That might represent a
simplification

no....an inaccuracy...

but there is little doubt that he was awarded a PhD by
the UoL as the result of a climatological study.

As such it has no academic significance whatsoever.

the american system 'titles' is very different....
with ordinary lecturers widely called 'professors'

i ommited to comment on this because it merely confuses issues...

one conclusion does not follow from the other....
you are confusing your case such as it is.....

to requote
" I was accused by Canadian environmentalist David
Suzuki of being paid by oil companies. That is a lie. Apparently he
thinks if the fossil fuel companies pay you have an agenda

is he claiming it's a 'lie' of is he claiming that if they are paying
you that is likely to mean you have an agenda?

It is true that if you Google you will find lots of references to
Ball. You will find very few, if any, challenges to the science
underlying his arguments. If he is a fraud then this science must be
very flimsy indeed and thus very simple to challenge.

as stated...i've listened to him....
i hear plenty waffle....and very little substance.....

i'm only interested in the end in his claims and whether he can back
them....
when i see clear and real claims...and then when i see real and
clear backing...i'll be interested...

in the meantime the useful content i have seen from him
is zero.....

Hence if he is to be attacked, attack him there because it is there
where it matters.

agreed....
now find sommat he is actually saying complete with backing....

atm all i have is his waffle, his apparent money sources and dubious
claims to 'authority'

a stream of fossil media claims are being paraded here....
each one is of very low content...
most of the so-called 'authorities' used by these fossil media
'reports'...and the posters presenting them....seem to end up
in ectoplasm and fossil fuel corporations

i will be delighted to see anything with more substance...
even with oil/coal money behind it.....
i may even learn sommat.....

but i will not stand idly by while idiots make and quote
claims and 'reports' that they, thus far, cannot even start to
back up....

regards
