Default AZ Hits New High In Car Rental Taxes: 50%!!!

There have been many posts in the past about how state and local
governments see car and hotel taxes as easy sources of revenue, since
the majority of those users are not eligible to vote in those
states/localities.

It is not uncommon to see total taxes of up to 25% tacked on to the
base rental rate. Yesterday I rented a car for less than a day a PHX
Sky Harbor airport. Consider the following final bill:

Base Rate 36.53
PHX City Tax 4.50
Airport Tax 4.06
County Tax 2.50
State Surcharge 2.25
Sales Tax 4.55
Total 54.39

Note that the taxes and surcharges added near 50% to the bill. Note
also that many of the taxes are computed against other taxes!

Absolutely amazing. I wonder when they get to the point of killing the
fatted calf?
