Bridge between Java and Sumatra
The Indonesian government has plans to connect the two islands by a giant
suspension bridge spanning to some 30 kilometers. Perhaps a bit sensitive region seismically to do so. |

"Markku Grönroos" wrote in message i.fi... The Indonesian government has plans to connect the two islands by a giant suspension bridge spanning to some 30 kilometers. Perhaps a bit sensitive region seismically to do so. They have proposed this before but nothing seemed to happen. It seems to re-emerge avery 10 years or so. It would not be easy. It's a earthquake zone, near an active volcano (Anak Krakatau), and I think the water is quite deep. Also it is a busy shipping channel for . The concept is supposedly based on the Messina Straits bridge project in Italy, also a quake and volcano zone. I think that project was cancelled in 2006. I see that Tommy Winata, a very rich business man and supposedly one of Indonesia's top gamblers, seems to be pushing it this time. I assume he thinks it is feasible, or at least he sees a way of making money. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

Nothing's wrong with the post. Your Usenet life will be better if you kill file Little Larby like most have. Now while there's nothing wrong with the post, the idea of the bridge is pretty dumb. No economic sense at all. |

That problem doesn't exist between Sumatra and Java. True, there is commerce. But the cost of the restriction doesn't anywhere near meet the cost of the bridge. Particularly since a large amount of the commerce comes from central Sumatra and the road infrastructure is so bad that they couldn't even think of using the bridge. |
