Default Ft. Lauderdale port baggage handlers

over the years I have gotten used to the 'extortion' of paying baggage
handlers . So when I unloaded my luggage at Ft. Lauderdale port in Nov, I
automatically paid my "bribes". THEN I walked about 40 feet & saw a sign on
the wall !! the sign said something like baggage handlers are salaried
employees, no tipping necessary.. huh?????

*great* hmmph

sooooo on the way off the ship, I asked one of the cruiseline employees
standing around and asked them about the tipping. I got a REAL vague
hesitant reply... I was told,, "well, uhh,, you can do whatever you feel
comfortable with". ohh gee, great answer..

soooooo for those of you who have been to Ft. Lauderdale recently,, do you
still tip?? or not & worry IF your luggage will survive??

Well tipping may not be required but I would like to know that my luggage is
being well taken care of and $5-10.00 is not going to break me so regardless
I pay up regardless of embarkation port. Same thing when I am flying. I tip
those guys well also.

Gordon Will be cruising from Miami in March.

I love sailing from Port Everglades, It is just as you said. "40 feet away"
after you have tipped. I almost felt like going after the guy and asking for
my $10 back;

What if they weren't there at all, would you want to lug your bags, maybe
they are salaried, but that doesn't mean they earn a huge salary,,, it's
worth the tip for me to know my bags are being taken care of.

How well are the bags really taken care of, they grab your bags and put them
in the containers (wire style) for movement to the ship. The best line
those clowns use is : I will ensure that you bags get to your cabin" yeah
sure

We just cruised out of Port Everglades and yes we did tip. I think the sign
on the building is similar in meaning as HAL's "no tipping required" policy.
We tipped the same to the baggage handlers and the cruise staff as we would
on any other cruise.

Yvonne from NH-------loved the quick boarding on Maasdam!

I wouldn't quite call tipping extortion. You seem to be implying that
if you don't tip they will destroy your bags or commit some kind of
nefarious mischief on them. Frankly, I usually tip baggage handlers
(hotels, airports, etc.) but at the FLL Port we didn't tip as there
was no chance to. We had a limo bring us to the port, and the limo
driver unloaded our bags which we then "lugged" a few feet inside the
bus terminal. I tipped him. Then a guy with a fork lift brought out
a wire cage and plopped it next to each pile of bags and the handlers
dumped them in the cages without regard to whose bag was whose. Then
the fork lift carried them off, presumably onto the ship. If the
handlers had unloaded our bags and dragged them into the building I
would have tipped them the usual buck a bag.

I realize that some people are annoyed at tipping, but like it or not,
that's the way things work.

Maybe they should join the longshoremen union.
