Austin, Texas is not a music capital
James McMurtry. Absolutely superb writer and performer. -- Larry Wrong. Raised in Virginia, traveled all over the country, had more to do with San Antonio while making his career than Austin. Don't just take my word for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McMurtry Like Willie Nelson, only moved to Austin once he had the dough. Again, truly excellent Texas music is coming from anywhere but Austin. |

Austin, Texas is not a music capital

The London underground also has some good buskers. *However, as you point out below, Austin is considerably smaller. The real shame is that a state the size and population of TX has so little to contribute to the national arts community. *At the very least one of the major cities should have a top shelf "A" orchestra. I agree. *OTOH, my horn teacher pointed out to me, he was former principal horn player of the now defunct San Jose Symphony, *the funding of orchestras is a major problem all across the country. *Few people are willing to support a top shelf "A" orchestra. *My son is in charge of fund solicitation for the New York Phil and has also mentioned that even in NYC it is hard to get support for such an orchestra. Also, KMFA doesn't get high levels of support here... However, as a libertarian who is a believer in the "Chicago school" of economics, there is no such thing as a free lunch. *The market will supply what people want, good or bad... Regards... Tom The point here is not to bash Texas. Its to show that Austin is a fraud. Houston and Dallas are producing truly great musicians at least by luck of the draw, but the "music capital" of Austin has yet produced a truly notable genius musician that every major city in any modern nation has. As for Opera's and orchestras, there are probably dozens of third world cities that outperform Austin in that regard. Again....whats conspicuous about Austin is its LACK of musical talent. ****ing KANSAS CITY at least has Tech N9NE (who sold at least a million albums, cameo'd in movies, video games, and TV, and owns a record company) ****ING WICHITA KANSAS at least has Joe Walsh That's because, just by luck of the draw, even a cutlurally isolated and barren place like Kansas is going to produce someone more notable than anyone from Austin, the "live music capital of Texas". |
