China Travel Discussion List
THE ORIENTAL-LIST is a moderated list for those who prefer to discuss
travel in China or have their questions answered without wading through irrelevant cross-postings, 'spam', and other trivia. Now more than eight years old and with several hundred members, the list provides a forum for the discussion of travel in China, and across China's borders to the nearest major centres, such as Almaty, Bishkek, Islamabad, Kathmandu, Hanoi, and Ulaan Baatar. Practical travel queries; discussions of the merits of individual destinations or routes; accounts of individual experiences; historical and cultural material relevant to China travel; reviews and notifications of other China travel resources (publications, websites, public lectures, etc); political, legal, and ethical matters to do with travel in China, and China travel news items are all welcome. The list is moderated, with the intention of keeping it free from irrelevant postings, and from commercial postings and 'spam'. It carries no advertising. The list of members is not made available to any individual or third party organisation. Membership is, of course, free, and members include those planning their first trips to China, experienced Asia travellers, and the authors of several books on travel in China. To subscribe, send a blank email to: subscribe-oriental-list [at] datasinica [.] com or visit http://www.datasinica.com |

On the other hand everyone can freely puke spam into rec.travel.asia. A great deal of spam appears on rec.travel.asia, but this is not it. rec.travel.asia is for the discussion of everything to do with travel in Asia. The Oriental-List is to do with travel in Asia, too, and so mentioning it here is appropriate. Spam is the uninvited promotion of commercial activity. Unlike the very many travel-related websites which advertise themselves here to boost visits and gain sales for travel companies and other advertisers, The Oriental-List carries no advertising whatsoever, and commercial postings and spam are not only forbidden, but actively blocked on the list. Admittedly some small latitude is given to the authors of books on China to say something about the launch of new titles, and everyone is allowed to mention their business briefly in a sig file but only on condition that the remainder of their posting is generally helpful, and not self-promotional. No one makes any income of any kind from the list, and mentions of it are not spam. Although it is increasingly popular and has been in existence for more than eight years (and in all of them mentioned rec.travel.asia) were it to disappear tomorrow it really wouldn't matter. Nevertheless, each reminder of the list's existence here is carefully posted under the same heading so that frequent users of rec.travel.asia already familiar with its contents can ignore it. The frequency is never more than once a week, and throughout the year is far less on average. Each reminder does, however, bring in new members, which would seem to indicate that readers of rec.travel.asia do indeed find it relevant and of interest. Moderator The Oriental-List |

i see it as information that such an e-mail exists ... if it isn't
posted, how would you know it exists and how to join it? there's absolutely no benefit to the keeper of the list as there are no ads in the e-mails and is filled with "on-the-ground" real life reports from real travelers as to what they're doing, where they stay, what they ate, how much they paid etc ... and while i can get away with "no-caps" here ...the list e-mails are a bit more formal and as they can occasionally be long, easier to read :-) ... nfi ... steve emmet On Sat, 16 Jul 2005 20:44:03 +0300, "Markku Grönroos" wrote: "Peter Neville-Hadley" kirjoitti viestissä w...
