Default Duty Free Liquor Warning

FYI:
Against our better judgement, we decided to buy a bottle of rum at the duty
free shop in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We knew we could carry it on to
Miami(they bring it to the gate), but would have to check it after we went
through customs, for our connecting flight to Dallas/Fort Worth. Needless to
say, despite beiing wrapped well and surrounded by clothing, it arrived in
DFW broken.
American Airlines doesn't cover glass breakage in checked luggage.
We can't be the only ones this has happened to.
So no more duty free liquor purchases for us until we can carry it on board.

Why did you pack it in checked luggage to begin with is what I want to
know. But rum probably costs $2 bottle so you didn't lose much.

This is all probably just a matter of luck and how "gentle" or "rough" those
baggage handlers are. A few weeks ago, I flew Southwest from SFO to BWI and
a buddy of mine wrapped 2 bottles of California wine in his check-in luggage
using some clothing like you guys did. No problem. It got to Baltimore safe
and sound, in one piece.

I cringed when I read this. What a horrible mess.

Maybe never. I just hope for toothpaste, shaving cream and suntan lotion.

When growing up we had powdered toothpaste. Doing a search now I see it is
available. And I expect more will become available. An example:
http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000IBWAR2/

Now for shaving there is shaving soap and a brush. That leaves suntan
lotion...

I think wine bottles have thicker glass than rum ones.

The TSA has just relaxed the liquid/gel ban to allow 4 oz/travel size
containers.
On a beach trip for a week we take at least 4 large bottles of sunblock!

They are also allowing any liquids after the security checkpoint which means
any liquids (including booze) purchased in the duty free we can carry
onboard.

The catch is if you have to connect in the US. You can carry it on from the
duty free in MBJ to MIA, but once you go through customs in MIA you are on
the unsecured side of the airport and have to re-check your luggage and go
back through security again and they won't let you bring it through. I'm not
sure if all US airports are like that(where you leave the secure side of the
airport after customs).

I, fortunately don't have to worry about connections to the Caribbean as I
have direct flights in and out. I get off my flight from MBJ in Orlando and
drive home. I would suggest anyone else that could do so, do that too,
especially if you plan to bring back the booze boxes.

Here's an idea for packing things that used to go in a carry-on into
checked luggage. If it will fit, put it in a quart, gallon or larger
zip lock bag. Express as much air as you can before zipping shut. Then
if it fits wrap in socks and put inside hard sole leather shoes (mens).
If they are not available, pick up some bubble wrap and tape before you
go on vacation. I packed my dad for a cruise out of Anchorage
disembarking in Vancouver BC His flights were out of Newark Liberty
with a connection in Detroit arriving in Anchorage.

On the return leg from Vancouver, he brought home two duty free bottles
of bourbon. That, his cologne, shaving gel, and deodorant flew from
Vancouver in his checked luggage stopping in Detroit arriving in Newark
Liberty. Along with my 90 yo father all packed checked luggage items
returned in one piece.

Who woulda thunk that the doper's method of transport for pot in the
60's, zip-lock bags and bubble wrap would prove useful for travelers
with legitimate items in their luggage, huh?
