Where is the best place to see a Priscilla Queen of the Desert style of drag
show in Sydney. We will be there over the New Year holidays.

Thanks for that Julie
Is there a show that you could recommend in particular.
We, (middle age married couple), were in Sydney about 5 years ago and we saw
a show at a hotel that was on the corner where the road from Kings Cross
joined Oxford Street. We can't remember the name, but when we went there
last year it was closed. We have looked on the net but there seems so many
that it is difficult to know which are good and which aren't.
Thanks
John

The two best showbars still in Sydney are the Imperial Hotel, where
Priscilla was filmed -they still do the show there occasionally, and
the Stonewall Hotel.

The Imperial Hotel is in Erskinville, a couple of minutes walk from
King Street in Newtown, the Stonewall is on Oxford St in Darlinghurst.

If you want to know what shows are on during your stay just pick up a
Sydney Star Observer from any of the gay venues around town, or pay
for one at a newsagent.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert? : Outfits at "Screensound" Canberra.

The outfits are on permanant display at "Screensound" Canberra.

For Kiwis: "Screensound" has "On a New Zealand River" (DIR Jane Campion) --
becuase of contractural reasons.
Te Papa does not have "On a New Zealand River"!
Belive it or Not!

Where did you get this information about a Jane Campion directed film,
'On a New Zealand River'? I am quite familiar with her work and know
of no such film. As far as the title goes, I don't know of a film by
that title, regardless of director. Can you provide more details about
where this movie is housed and further details about it (when made,
where, length, etc.)

Cheers,

Charles

"On a NZ River" -- Held by ScreenSound, Canberra
-- I don't know that "On a NZ River" has ever been relesed to video.
-- The NZ Film Archive might be a 1st step, but you will have to make it.
-- I only discovered this fact by visiting the archinve myself!
-- There are contractual issues ivolved! This film was Australian funded.

Max, are you sure you are not confusing the title with the
"The Story of a New Zealand River", a book (not a film) by
Jane Mander? A few minutes' googling has shown up a
couple of theories that Jane Campion's "The Piano" was
heavily influenced by that book.

In a film book about "The Piano", the clear existence of "On an NZ River" is
cited as the basis for "The Piano" and its success.
However, the film -- much like "The Paul Hogan Show" has been lying dormant
in the Australian ScreenSound archives for years. The film [without
question] exists.

I do believe the film is based on the book that you mention, but how "The
Piano" fits into this -- I am uncertain.

Probably if you started an online petition, TVNZ would show "On a NZ
River" -- but it would take a lot of lobbying effort to do so. Te Papa would
probably also have to be involved. DVD copies of this film are a dream
[possible, but far off] -- same as with "The Paul Hogan Show".

Many Canadian films have had fates similar to "On a NZ River" -- thanks to
the hateful imperial meddling of genocidal US propaganda film and
broadcasting interests (and corporations).
