Anyone know of any antiviral products we can take on cruise to protect
from Norovirus? The anti-bacterial hand sanitizers (alcohol based) are
noted to be innefective for virus.

Just plain soap and water should do it!! Also keep your hands away
from your face. All the same things you do on land.

There's a new non-alcohol based hand sanitizer lasting up to 4 hours:
http://www.safe4hours.com/index.asp

Article about it in Biospace com
http://www.biospace.com/news_story.a...D=20664&full=1

Supposedly, it resists both wash-off and perspiration. In comparison,
alcohol-based sanitizers provide only temporary protection as the
alcohol evaporates following application.

Also is registered with FDA.

I use this instead of Purell or the cruise-provided alcohol-based
products.

I think most if not all cruise lines insist that you use an antiviral
solution on your hands when you enter any of the eating areas.

Would someone please identify which hand sanitizers are effective against
viruses?

Thanks.

MMM - I believe hand washing for at least 20 sec. soap and water, and of
course 'friction' are the best choice. In the old days of Nursing School -
Ahem, and I mean the old days, they told us if we didn't have anything to do
we should wash our hands!!! - Of course in the 50's we had more work than
you could believe, but that instructor was there to tell us to keep
washing!!

I'm no expert on dieses and such, but isn't this question a waste of
time? If a cruise ship has
one of those viruses and some people are going to get hit with this virus
and some not, is using anti-bacterial hand sanitizers really going to
protect you? I know, it might reduce the chances of getting a virus. But,
you really think hand washing is going to protect you from a ship full of
sick people? It's like flying - when I fly during flu/cold season I figure
a few weeks after the fly I will end up with the a cold and I know exactly
where I got it - on the flight. Nothing I can do about it. Doesn't mean
tho that people should not be upset with the cruise lines letting their
ships get contaminated and making the passengers sick. Write your
Democratic congressman and Senator and ask them to investigate this subject
and force the cruise lines to fix the problem.

LOL! Joyce, especially if you were the scrub or surgical nurse!!! I
remember those days and those horribly hard and stiff bristled brushes we
had to use that made our arms and elbows raw! ;-)

Kathy, I always carry a small bottle of Purell in my purse and bring Lysol
wipes..We wipe down the cabin, especially door knobs, phone, frequently
handled surfaces and the bathroom with the Lysol wipes and use Purell before
eating in the dining room..Also before getting the food in the buffet line
and afterwards, before consuming it, since we had handled all those ladles
and serving spoons...I always wash my hands well with soap and water every
chance that I get, especially after being in the casino. Practice good hand
washing with soap and hot water often and Purell in between and you should
be fine. Hand rails and elevator buttons are also petri dishes!

Have a wonderful and healthy cruise!

Old Hospital Stuff -- Yes Jean, bleeding hands in the winter, and I
lived in the midatlantic states of
the country. A city hospital, poor, no air conditioning. Our Nurs .Inst.
told us to wash our hands if we didn't have anything to do!! We had too much
to do, yet I believe common sense and [persistent hand washing took care of
many minor health issues. Keep washing - friction, soap and water!!!
My hands will never be the same!!!! -- Those brushes were tough!!
