Default Cost and danger of travelling in Thailand

Thailand is one of the safest (and cheapest) places I've been. Safer
than the US (especially for "white" men). 98% (more or less) of Thais
are Buddests and don't seem to dislike anyone, well maybe the Burmese.

Amazing the number of Israelis you meet there.

Perhaps they are after the Promised Land II?

Dont waste your bullets on such a stupid ignorant basted such as lh.
He probably doesn't now that USA was founded by the EUROPEANS.
And that most of US have relatives down there.

Americans travelling in the more touristed areas of Thailand can expect

to
receive hostile treatment from European tourists

Crap, absolute crap, American tourists are not a distinguishable category
and are not treated as such by Europeans. To put it differently, unless

they
speak with a twang louder than everyone else, say "wow" at least once in
every sentence, have T-shirts with texts that say USA rules the world,

carry
six-shooters and stetson hats, no one even thinks about them as Americans.

but rarely if ever from Thais.

True, Thais are generally pro-american, as long as they feel they receive
the respect that is due to them. A possible exception could be in the

south
where a large part of the population is Muslim, but even down there as

well
as in Malaysia I think Americans would have little to fear.

However, there are places where Americans are treated as a distinct
category. I would not recommend any American to go for a holiday in

Faludja
in Iraq, nor in the NWFP in Pakistan.

Hi,

I am planning to go to Thailand for a month in February.

Good time to go - it's after the big Dec-Jan tourist season, and is still
relatively cool (for the tropics, mind you) and dry.

How much
money do I need?

If you travel on a shoestring budget (stay in cheap guesthouses, eat at
small, local restaurants and use local ground transportation), you can
easily stay on US$20/day or less.

I want to visit Bangkok as well as most of the country.

You'll need more than a month to see most of the country.

I
am planning to go there alone ( I was originally planning to go there

with
my girlfriend but we broke up).

Solo travel has its advantages, of course. One of the advantages is being
able to come and go as you please, and not be beholden to the tastes,
desires, interests, budgets, schedules, expectations and patience (or lack
thereof) of a partner.

Is Thailand dangerous for a white man?

Nope. It's very safe. But like pretty much anywhere in the world where lots
of tourists go, there will be a few people trying to scam you, rip you off,
or pick your pocket. Watch out for friendly strangers who try to get you to
spend or bet money on something, particularly gems. And the tuk tuk drivers
in Bangkok who offer city tours for 10 baht are going to be taking you to
many different gem and silk shops in order to get kickbacks.

Is
there some place to avoid?

Pattaya, but only because it is dirty and over-touristed.

To get off thread again... They are part of a "Nation", from another
"Country", visiting another "State".
Put THAT in your smoke and pipe it!
