a couple random questions about my upcoming visit to London

the conventional wisdom in the travel guides is to use your ATM card to get local currency. 2nd preference seems to be to walk into a bank if you have U.S. $$ to convert. is this the street-level advice as well? ATM is the best. Walking in a bank and change cash is possible, but expensive and can be a hassle (opening hours, they maybe want to see an ID and they can charge you quite a big fee for changing).
