Default Wales is a country

Funny, we are taking a bus trip to England, Scotland, and Wales and
then by car around Ireland.

I wonder how many people in the world even know that Wales is a
country. Are they actually countries or are they states of the UK,
like states in the U.S.?

Wales isn't a country. It is a principality.

Many principalities have also been countries. As well as some
duchies.

Wikipedia has an article about Wales, as well as articles defining terms
like country, state and sovereign state.
"The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state
consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and
Wales."

More to the point, are you aware that there is no Country named Ireland?

Why do you say that? Is it something like there's no country
named Germany?

That's not a reason for it to not be a country.

Geographically, it is of course a Country. Politically, it is divided
into 2 separate parts, both with different names, forms of government
and currencies. And, just like Germany from the late 40s to the late
80s, reunification seems to be a very distant prospect.

Whose definition of 'country' do you embrace?
And have terms like "countryside" and "country music" anything to do
with that?
