Euro 5 for a half litre beer in France and Italy. That's horrific in my
book.

drink wine?

It's even more expensive. :-(

Not in Italy, when you stay away from the tourist spots. I did find wine
ridicoulsly cheap at some places in Italy (like small pup-style pizza
places). Even in Pisa (not right at the tower, but a few minutes away near
the university).

And normally the "house wine" (vino de la casa) is drinkable.

Frank

Some Alsatian beers are very good

I remember sitting next to a lady on a flight and they served Kronenbourg,
and I remarked "Oh, they serve french beer" - at which she gave me a bad
look and said "It's not french, it's Alsatian!" ;-)

, and some south Tyrolean ones too.

Never call South Tyroleans Italians, unless you really want to **** them
off ;-)

For about the same money you can have half a litre of (house)wine in an
italian restaurant. Maybe not in Rome, but certainly in Genua or Pisa. In
France you'll also find wine chepaer than beer.

In our recent trip to Marseille etc, I found it quite easy to get house
wine for 6 euro a half litre, sometimes less. 4 euro at Toinou
Coquillages in Marseille for example.

I tend to favour wine with food, though it depends what I'm eating.
Tsing Tao was 3 euro a bottle at a chinese restaurant we dined at in
Paris last week- just round the corner from the Hotel de Ville. Went
well with the tripe!

8-O

In June I paid EUR8 for a 330ml bottle of Mahou on the terrace of a very
swish Madrid hotel.

That's what I paid for a bottle of Red Wine the same size on board of
Ryanair ;-)

Especially as neither country knows anything about beer. Drink
wine.

What an odd remark! And very untrue also.

Espoecially if you use it as a mixer with voddy!

What? Vodka and beer?

If you're Markkku, sure! I think I climed over him a few times on my
recent trip...

To get to someone else, I hope.

Perhaps he was going to that swish hotel with swish clientele in Madrid.

You're confusing Markkku, George. He was wondering what a Swish hotel
was doing in Madrid!

It wasn't Swish, Markku ... it was Shpain

I thought you were talking about a hotel with painted men?

It might be possible, but there's not a huge difference ime and the wine
for that price is pretty awful.

If you want cheap beer you better come to Germany.

I did that in 1985. I now live in Austria.

I thought we were supposed to refer to Alsatians as German shepherds.

of course. But as the places I want to go are generally in a tourist area,
it can be a problem.
